Summary
”You surprise me, my lord.”
Lyonel looked up from his tragic ale and across the table at Lord Manfred Dondarrion, who was watching him with a pinch between his eyebrows. The two of them were alone for the moment, though thinking of it now, Lyonel could not have said when the others had left. Manfred stared at him, eyes sharp, expression somewhere between pissed off and amused.
”Hm?”
”It’s just strange my lord, for I never took you for such a lover of dragons, nor that dead one in particular,” Manfred said, looking at him hard. Lyonel could not make sense of the words for a long moment. When they finally fell into place, he let out an incredulous laugh.
”What the fuck are you talking about?”
Weeks after Ashfrod and Lyonel is still not feeling like himself, enough so that people around him start to notice. This prompts him to do some reflecting on why that might be. Unfortunately for him, he ends up getting carried away by his imagination in the process, and the idea of what might have happened that first night in Ashford if he had been just a little less drunk.

The sound was getting louder. The pain was somehow getting worse. Whatever it was, he could feel it walk on the moss, though he could not see anything but the upcoming dawn. The light was so blue now. It was so hard to keep his eyes open.
“Oh,” a melodic male voice said somewhere behind his head. “Oh no,”
The last thing he saw before losing consciousness was a riot of black curls and two dark, shining eyes.
The last thing he thought was that they were beautiful.
“Oh that’s no good at all.”
Nicolò, a lonely wandering knight, knows that he is dying. What he doesn't know, is that the ground he is bleeding out on is in the middle of a fairy ring.

It took a few more blinks and a brief look of deep confusion before Yusuf’s gaze seemed to focus. As he did, a sleepy smile slid on his face, but there was also something else. Something Nicolò couldn’t quite place.
“Good dreams?” Nicolò asked, finding his voice had gone rough. Yusuf squirmed.
“Nico…” he said softly, running a hand down his body. Nicolò’s eyes fixed sharply on the way the thin blanket shifted against his skin at the move. ”…I was dreaming about you.”

Summary
By the time Yusuf reached their door he was nauseous with nerves. Yusuf had been too much last night, he knew it. He always was. He had scared Nicolò away with his intensity, with the depth of feeling Nicolò had no hope to match. Nicolò had ran away, despite their shared immortality, because of course he would. Who wouldn’t? Yusuf could already picture it. The empty room, only an imprint on the mattress betraying that anyone else had ever been there at all.

Nicolò didn’t know it could be like this: beautiful even as it aches, and tender even as it shatters him.
With all of the lovers he’s ever taken before, Nicolò’s never wanted softness— never wanted to give it, nor did he want to take it. He simply wanted to pull pleasure from his own body in the most efficient way for both of them. He knows that if he had ever tried for anything more, he would’ve given them a peek at the overwhelming flood of longing threatening to burst out from behind his ribs.
Nicolò could never love moderately, and so he had never tried to.
Oh, with Yusuf, though, Nicolò can’t stand the idea of giving him anything but softness. Wants to cleave himself open to show Yusuf the vulnerable, splintered parts of his heart, and ask for Yusuf to treat him just as gently.
