Summary
Geralt takes care of Jaskier, who has fallen ill with infection from the burns on his hands.
This fic imagines what would have happened if Jaskier had been released from jail on his own in season 2, and continued to work as The Sandpiper, with his burns growing steadily worse. Jaskier does not realize he is on the verge of a serious, deadly condition.
Geralt comes running, worried that he has come too late.

Unlike the audience, Geralt could see the truth of the matter. Jaskier’s eyes weren’t sparkling. They were glassy. His skin wasn’t glowing. That was sweat. The heat radiating from his skin wasn’t the heat of excitement. It was the clamminess of illness. Jaskier held a long note, and finally, looked straight at Geralt.
The bard’s eyes widened in shock. A string twanged and broke. Silence fell. There was an awkward, pregnant pause. Then, Jaskier’s eyes rolled slowly back in his head, and he pitched forward.
His body fell hard from the stool, like an unbalanced sack of bricks. His head would have hit the corner of the table as he fell, but by the time he reached it, he was already in Geralt’s arms.

Yennefer watched in horror as Jaskier's eyes rolled into his head and he fell.
“Jaskier!” Geralt yelled, already moving.
The sorceress felt her chaos reacting, even before her brain did. She enveloped the man's body with her magic. Surrounded by a violet glow, the bard's motionless body was now floating in mid air.
Focused on not loosing her grip on him, she had completely forgotten the floating stones, which clattered on the ground as they fell all together. The Witchers were thankfully all fast enough to avoid them.
Yen slowly lowered Jaskier into Geralt's arms, still outstretched trying to catch him.
The white haired Witcher easily caught him, holding him against his chest.
“Jaskier!” He shook him slightly, without getting a response.
The sorceress was on Geralt's side in an instant, grabbing the bard’s head with her hands. She had barely touched him when the younger man's appearance started to change.
Dark purple circles appeared under Jaskier's eyes, his face turned scrawny. His right hand, which laid limb, was red and there were blisters and blood. His body suddenly was much more lighter in the Witcher's arms.- Language:

He smells him before he sees him, a waft of cool water and green things, a scent he’d know half-dead after decades of smelling it, no matter the months since he was last around it.
“I want to hire you.”
There’s a cosmic irony to this somewhere along the line, a second meeting in a pub with him tucked away in a corner drinking alone and the bard sitting across from him with proprietary self-assurance.
The man across from him now, however, isn’t some bright-eyed teenager, more fanciful than sensible and with far too much self-confidence.
This man is older. No less beautiful but with something sharper around his edges. His hair is longer than Geralt’s ever seen it before, and his jacket is a deep red leather cut close to his body instead of a pastel bit of frippery meant to make him seem dainty. There’s an edge to this man now, a sort of hardness to his eyes.
(His breath catches, just for a moment, at the knowledge of his contribution at putting it there).
(post-mountain, geralt thinks he's never going to see jaskier again) (and then he's approached about a contract with the sandpiper)

Even emotional support bards have their limits. Maybe Geralt didn't mean what he said after the dragon hunt, but if he *did*...regardless, Jaskier needs a minute. A week, at most. He's just...enforcing a mutual cooldown period before he goes back to Geralt and tries to fix this mess.
Given the dwarven idea of an acceptable shortcut, he should have known better than to take Yarpen's recommendation for the long way out of the mountains. It quickly becomes much, much longer than anticipated. How much trouble can one Witcherless bard get into, anyway?
(Jaskier strikes off alone after the dragon hunt debacle. Monsters, mayhem, and meet-cutes immediately ensue.)

Jaskier can't be his interpersonal crutch anymore, not with an innocent Child Surprise awaiting Geralt's noble but emotionally crippled care. Geralt needs to meet him halfway on this one. ...A quarter of the way, at least. ...One apology. That's a realistic expectation for growth, isn't it? And if Geralt *means* it, and he's actually hated Jaskier all along...well. He's not going down to Caingorn, that's for certain. He'll take the long way back to Geralt's side.

Geralt‘s world was immersed in lilac and gooseberries, while Yennefer focused on braiding the offending hair strands into tight plaits. He basked in the heat of her body and the feeling of her hands in his hair. It was nice not to be feared, to have someone touch him without worry or conscious thought.
Ciri had never thought twice about touching him. But Yennefer usually restrained herself, and Jaskier even more so since the Mountain. He missed those casual touches.

They can be given a name, but it will never be a true one and people will always have an allergic reaction to saying this false name. Only a soulmate speaking your true name aloud will break the curse. The family though has never cared, they've only cared about the family fortune and marrying well.
But Jaskier cares. He is determined to travel the world, find his soulmate and learn what his name is.
And the best way to travel the world seems to be with a rather taciturn witcher named Geralt of Rivia. If he started to hope that Geralt would be the one to say his true name, well that was one thing that Jaskier would not say aloud.
