Summary
On his first day, Eddie sees the ghost before he meets him.
There is a boy, younger than Christopher but not by much, who runs around the station like it’s a playground. For a second, while Eddie is pulling a shirt over his head, he thinks the boy is real and someone ought to be watching out for him because a fire station is no place for a kid that young to play unsupervised.
And then the boy, pale, skinny and too frail for his age, passes through an exiting member of C shift like wind through a plastic bag. A ghost.
“Who the hell is that?”
Eddie watches as the ghost – just a fucking kid, really – whips his head around to the voice. His face lights up and Eddie’s heart sinks because how cruel can this world be?
He turns around and Eddie is struck. The man is strong and broad, all blue eyes and defined features. If it weren’t for the splotch of color above his eyebrow, Eddie would think that the man and the little boy standing at his side were genetic matches.
OR Eddie Diaz can see ghosts — that’s nothing new. The little boy following around his new coworker is a different story.

“Getting rejected every six minutes by the many singles of SoCal sounds like my own personal Hell, Buck,” Eddie muttered. “I’m gonna pass. You guys have fun, though.”
Buck scoffed, looking scandalized.
“Eddie. You think you’re gonna get rejected during speed dating. Seriously? You?!”
Buck’s impossibly blue eyes were trailing all over his face, his hands gesturing up and down Eddie's body.
“You’re a badass firefighter, a loving father, and look…” he paused, “like that. Trust me, you're gonna be fine.”
A flush of heat spread up Eddie’s neck and reddened his cheeks. He didn’t need to glance at his reflection in Bobby’s stainless steel pot to know that.

“It could be worse,” Buck says.
Eddie is pacing the length of the hotel room. Buck’s hotel room. The one that they shared last night, because they got married. Drunk married. In Vegas. By fucking Elvis. Jesus fucking Christ. If Eddie wasn’t so hungover he’d worry that the splitting in his head was a brain aneurysm.
“How, Buck? How could it possibly be worse?”
“We could have married strangers?”
(Or, Eddie and Buck get married, move in together, and then fall in love. In that order. Kind of.)

“I need you-“ Chris made a face as his shoulders twitched. “I want you too say something that makes it sound like I’m in, like, danger. Nothing too crazy! But, enough that it’ll spook him. Them.”
Chris had been seeing Dr. Azeez for a few years now. The man was used to Chris coming in, dropping some awful lore on him, and dipping. Chris liked to think it made their relationship stronger.
“And why,” Dr. Azeez pushed his glasses up his nose. “ in the world would I do that?”
“Because I’m a really good patient.”
“No.”
“Because you believe in the power of love and friendship.”
“No.”
“Because my dad is gay and his best friend is half-ly and they're both in love with each other and I have a mom whose dead and I recently learned that blood doesn’t matter?”
Dr.Azeez jolted. “Oh my.”

“My mom said, uh, that his name was Buck. That he was going to go to the fire academy and that he had a—” she broke off, rubbing her own forehead, exactly where his skin went pink. “She said he went by Firehose.”
Buck didn’t need all of his coworkers to look at him in alarm; he was pretty sure he’d gone deadly pale. His daughter knew four things about him, and one of them was his old tinder profile handle. He felt a little like he was going to die.
“She’s got your eyes,” Eddie commented, unhelpfully.

Buck finds out he has a daughter, and also a stupidly big crush on his best friend. It's an adjustment.

He found a thick pad of gauze so he tore it open with his teeth and carefully situated it around the wood, Buck crying out weakly as Eddie put pressure.
"I know, I'm so sorry baby, I'm so sorry," Eddie whispered brokenly, holding the gauze tightly.
"I like that," Buck breathed, eyes roaming a bit listlessly as he grew dizzy. "Like you callin' m' baby."
Eddie swallowed back a sob, shaking his head. "I'll call you baby for the rest of our lives, so you better stay with me, you understand Evan Buckley? We're supposed to have time, I'm supposed- we- I was going to do this right, you deserve the best, I was trying to be the best for you, I needed time," he whispered, Buck smiling faintly.

“A week,” Eddie sighed. “We can do this, right?”
Eddie’s gaze was pleading, needing assurance and comfort. His eyebrows were pinched in the middle of his forehead and Buck wanted to reach out and smooth it out with his thumb. Instead, he said, “’Course we can. We’ve faced tsunamis, beenados, earthquakes, broken dams… hey, where do we think the Diaz Parents Staying For A Week ranks?”
“Most likely to end in death,” Eddie muttered.
Buck clicked his tongue as he pulled the bowls from the cabinet for the salad, “That’s the lightning strike, actually.”

Summary
One thing about Eddie Diaz is that he does not believe in the universe, destiny, fate, or whatever you like to call it. Especially when it comes to love. He did once and learned his lesson the hard way. No amount of every pot has a lid; you’ll find someone when you stop looking, or other platitudes from his Abuela could ever change his mind. And trust him at almost 45, he’s heard a lot.
So yeah, with a failed marriage, two disastrous (straight) relationships, a whole bunch of (gay) first dates, and one glorious (but very short) gay relationship under his belt, Eddie Diaz does not believe in fate.
That is, until he crosses paths with one Evan Buckley on a bright Tuesday morning, some time in February.
It goes something like this.or

“Buck” Eddie’s voice is low, practically pleading. “It’s not safe. Please. Just think about moving back in with me.”
“My car was broken into. It’s fine.” Buck says firmly.
“They eviscerated it!”
“Eddie, it’s LA. It’s a miracle my car hasn’t been broken into before now. It’s a smashed window. And yeah. It’s not great that they poured beer all over the seats, but the Jeep is in the shop and I’ll get it detailed. I’m not breaking my lease.”

“Yes, but –”

As it turned out, to Eddie’s complete downfall probably, Hen and Karen were not sensible people after a few glasses of wine. Instead, they were smart and clever and absolutely diabolical and Eddie? Eddie was shockingly willing to go along with anything their brilliant, twisted minds came up with.
And really, he only had himself to blame for dodging their questions and mumbling out the horrible half-truth that he wanted to date instead.

When Eddie was first convinced to make a dating profile, he never expected to match with the person he wanted the most. Sort of.
