Steve only bought the ring for Bucky because the stone was the exact same colour as Bucky's eyes and, at that price, it was a bargain he couldn't pass up. He probably should have, as he later discovered, because the ring came with some undocumented features: its very own ghost pirate and its very own curse. (Technically, that probably meant the ring had still been a bargain, since he hadn't actually paid for either of those things.) Bargain or not, Steve wasn't looking forward to explaining to an extremely overprotective genie why he was suddenly being haunted by the ghost of the Dread Pirate...Bob?

Cara snorts. “Y’know, like when he kisses her. Leans her back. It’s all dramatic, makes good photos.”
“Huh.” Dyn scratches his neck again. “Is…that something people do in real life?”
“Mostly at weddings.” Cara shrugs. “If your goal with this is to sweep her off her feet, then I’d say kissing her in a way that she’s always thought to be really romantic is probably a safe bet.”
“Okay.” Dyn squints down at his paperwork. “But…why is that seen as romantic? Why do women like it?”
Cara throws her hands up. “You think I know? Did you forget who you’re talking to?”
“What, you’ve never kissed anyone that way?”
“No, because I’ve always been afraid I’ll drop them.” Cara shrugs.
Dyn feels his eyes widen. “Is…wait, I – what do you mean drop them? Has that happened before?”

“Yes, Steve, I’m George Barnes.” He cups the boy’s cheek and finds it cold as ice. “Come inside, bubba, you need to get warm.”
“Mister Barnes, please. Please, you gotta save my Ma!” Steve croaks, shaking as tears fall and freeze to his cheeks. “Please, he’s hurtin’ her bad.”

“How is it he sounds a thousand times more robotic than any of the actual robots around here?” Tony muttered, manfully enduring the elbow Hill was applying to his ribs.
“Okay. Can you tell me who you are?”
“The asset. Codename: The Winter Soldier.”
Steve waited for a moment, but shockingly Deep Freeze didn’t immediately jump into his arms proclaiming himself to be ‘James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes, Steve Rogers’ best friend!’. God those were some pointy elbows.
“Okay. Can you tell me everyth—uh, that is, what is the earliest thing you can remember right now?”
Robocop actually paused for a second at that one. Something flickered in his eyes, the first hint of emotion they’d seen from him.

This is the 4 Minute Window Advent calendar for 2081 AD--no, wait, sorry, it's only 2022. But yes, here we are! As always, my goal is to write a bit of story every day between the Immaculate Conception and Christmas, but nobody freak out if it's late or the next day or whatever: life has caught up to me, but I'll get this done, I promise. Explicit eventually, the rest as it comes.
I have a pretty good idea of where we're going, but if there's something you really want to see happen, tell me in comments and I'll work it in if I can. (In fact, actually, after this year's advent is finished, I'm thinking of opening up future advents to whoever wants to play in this universe. There are a million stories in the naked city, etc., and it's actually incredibly low pressure, narratively speaking: this year's installment, for instance, features such exciting scenes such as Steve Rogers Waxes Poetic About Pickles.) I am also hopeful that we'll see new work from some of the usual suspects and regular collaborators to 4MW. Thanks as always to my betas, all mistakes are mine, I'll fix typos as I catch them. Bucky’s daily circuit, without fail, takes him to the small plot of land where Steve is buried. Brooklyn’s ghostly ruins are the perfect setting for the once proud tombstone, now battered and sloping from wind and grit.
Sometime in the future, Earth has been left uninhabitable after a long alien war. The few humans remaining fled to the skies, leaving only Bucky Barnes behind to monitor the dying planet.
Then, a very much alive Steve Rogers crash lands at his front door.

But when he gets lost in a storm and nearly falls into a pond he starts to rethink the whole like a dream aspect of life in the country. And when a red-eyed, sharp-clawed, silver-fanged creature rises out of the darkness, Steve is one hundred percent certain the dream's morphed into a nightmare.
...until it gives him a cup of tea.
(Inspired partly by this prompt a supernatural creature is supposed to scare you but instead it gives you a cup of tea and a blanket because you're having a bad day and you keep coming back and partly by this painting.)

He immediately opened it to a picture he got from the museum. It wasn’t as if there was anything special about this picture in particular. It was one of thousands. Anyone could get a picture of Captain America. But he wanted a reminder that maybe, just maybe, he was more than a ghost story. Maybe he mattered.
Or, in which Bucky Barnes tries to piece himself together and at the end of the day, everything comes back to Steve Rogers.

Fairy tales need castles and curses and royalty and unrepentant bad guys. If you can find a dragon and an evil fairy and enchanted sleep, well, those are just bonuses. Not if you ask the poor bastards who have to live through them, of course. They'd prefer to have exactly none of it. But fairy tales never ask for permission; it's kind of their hallmark.
The poor bastard of the moment was Prince Steven Grant of the House of Rogers. This time, however, things might not work out entirely in the fairy tale's favour, because the castle happened to be Prince Steven's best friend and, once fairy tales started twisting, you could never tell exactly where they'd stop.

Season after season passed and Steve didn't see a single human, only the animals and the birds and the plants and the lake, until the day the man with the silver arm appeared, stripped naked, and waded into the lake. For the first time in a long time Steve left his oak-self to crouch hidden in the bushes, watching him.
The man was beautiful, Steve had never seen a human who was so much like an oak, he hadn't thought it was possible, and he wanted to run his fingers over the man's skin, see if he felt as strong as he looked, see if his skin was smooth or rough. He wanted to touch his hair, find out if it was soft. He wanted to touch the silver arm, to discover what it was. It looked like metal, but he didn't see how that was possible.
In which Steve is something like a dryad, Bucky's not the Winter Soldier anymore but he's not quite sure he's Bucky, and together they discover that some choices are worth making.

“Listen, I was just thinking,” Steve says, his face open, eyebrows raised in a tentatively hopeful expression. “Why don’t you come stay at my place for a while? I’ve got an office that I barely use, and a change of scenery might do you good, right? Help you beat that writer’s block?” With a crooked smile, he adds, “I promise I’m not a serial killer.”
While Bucky would normally crack a joke about how that’s exactly what a serial killer would say, right now, all he can do is blink at Steve in surprise, heart tripping over itself in his chest. Steve wants him to come and stay at his place. In Massachusetts. Just the two of them.
"Oh," Bucky croaks. "I- Wow."
“I mean, no pressure,” Steve says hastily. “Totally fine if you don’t wanna. I just thought I’d offer, in case it might help, y’know?”
“Yeah.” Bucky ignores the little voice in his head that sounds an awful lot Nat and Becca, telling him he’s setting himself up for heartbreak. “I mean, if you’re sure, that would be amazing.”

The tips of Barnes’s ears turn red, and he mutters something that sounds suspiciously like, “I know.”
