Summary
Eugene was US Army property. He’d been good, had put in the work, done what he was told. Functioned like a medic was supposed to. Closed himself off to the men, stayed a safe distance away. There had to be a reason that he deserved this sickness. Something that lingered deep inside him, clawing at him from the inside out. It was like a leash too tight against his neck, constantly tugging, pulling him back again and again, reminding him who he belonged to.

Dick stopped next to him, watching curiously. “What are you doing?” He inquired.
Lew side eyed him, tongue still hanging out. “Eating snow.” Without another word he let gravity do the work as he flopped backwards onto the ground. It wasn’t enough to really cushion his landing, but he had a proper landing technique. It was nothing compared to throwing yourself from a plane. “Oof,” he huffed out as he hit the ground, splaying his arms out in an angel shape. Instead of flapping his limbs like one would to create a snow angel, he stared up at Dick who was still standing. “Well, come on.”
Dick carefully lowered himself to the ground an angel's length away from Lew and started making his imprint. Lew, apparently satisfied, started doing the same. Neither of them made an attempt to get up, even after they’d both stopped moving. Their arms were still splayed out, hand barely a finger's length away from each other as they watched snow fall from the sky.

Babe hummed. “Already damned anyway.”
A shiver ran down Eugene’s spine as the familiar burning of guilt settled in his stomach. It was easier to ignore while being wrapped in Babe’s arms, something that felt so right. Still, it made him want to pull away and curl in on himself.

“The heat, right,” Babe nodded sagely, lightly patting Eugene’s thigh. “I thought it was worse in Louisiana.”

He turns it over in his head, looking at it from every angle. He probably shouldn’t, but it’s like a loose tooth in his mouth, something he can’t stop drifting back to. There’s something magnetic about the idea of it. There’s a stirring, a waking excitement, an irritatingly physical response that denies him control.

Jimmy threw up his hands, shoving himself off the floor. “You know, I don’t know why I even signed up for this.”
Donny had the gall to look ticked, and maybe Jimmy shouldn’t have shouted, or ripped the papers from his fingers, but that was beside the point. “What? The band or the law degree?”
“All of it!” Jimmy shot back. “I can’t do any of it, it’s too hard!” Shoving the last of his papers in his briefcase, he made for the door, muttering, “And I was an absolute idiot to think I could juggle this many balls at once.”
Or, Jimmy finds himself underwater with work and Donny doesn’t seem to understand.

Summary
Nobody told them how much things would be different after the war. Nix, of course, knew there’d be aspects in his life that would never be the same, but he didn’t expect the bulk of those things to be so minuscule.
Dick had changed after the war, too. But the grief caught on to him much later than the others.
