*
Light’s fingers tighten on L’s wrist. Panic is swelling in his throat. He doesn’t want to do any of these stupid traps. This wasn’t how any of this was meant to go. Selling L out was supposed to be enough for Jigsaw to spare him. His nails are pressing crescent moons into L’s skin. He barely even notices.
“I don’t want to go on my own.”
“Light.” L’s voice is gentler than he has ever heard it. “It is the only way to proceed, and we must keep going if we want to get out of here. You can do this.”
Light sniffs. His hold stays firm for another few seconds, before he reluctantly uncurls his fingers. He gives a brief nod. He can do this. Of course he can do this. He is the god of the new world. He can do anything.
That doesn’t mean he wants to.
“See you on the other side.” L gives him an unconvincing smile.

Summary
Light managed to liken his condition to that of an insect's metamorphosis. None can stop the caterpillar's transformation into a butterfly. When the moist wings of the butterfly strengthened, it was ready for takeoff. Drowning in bombastic dreams, Light's body was already at the final stages of the metamorphosis. Once he flew, it would be excruciatingly painful to break his wings with force. Even if he was perfected, Light chose not to fly.
Only Kira could break his butterfly wings now.
