In his waking hours, Nick was easy-going and laid back but his eyes were backed with something bordering upon calculating and his shoulders were always slightly ridged with an almost unnoticeable tension. In his sleep, these two factors were absent. Normally, it settled something deep within him. But on that night, he found himself wondering aloud, his voice barely a whisper, “What is it that keeps you on edge in the waking hours of the day? What is that tension and why is it there? What are you afraid of?”
And then he’d wondered, “What was that look in your eyes and why don’t I know it like I know the rest of you?”

After the events of Hop 31, Maverick is left distraught with panic and fear while he sits in the waiting room and awaits news of Goose's fate. Maverick's dogtags were the only thing they found in the rubble. It was a wonder they were able to recover it, almost intact among the F-18 destroyed beyond repair.
Bradley ran his thumb over the metal plaques, touching their engravings, reading Mav's name over and over again. It took him a while to notice it, the silver ring dangling alongside it. He tilted his head to the side, brain functioning slower than usual as he seemed to not grasp what it meant.
Before Bradley could move, a familiar voice piped up from his left, but it was not Iceman, it was Hangman there, hand stretched out like he had the right to (probably) the last remnants of Bradley's godfather.
"Give it to me," Hangman's tone was infinitely different from what he was used to, no smugness, no taunting. Just anguish, pure and simple.
"Hangman, I don't know-" He barely got the argument out.
"Goddammit," The blond pulled out his own chain from under his shirt, holding it up for him to see, pulling on it so harshly, the skin around his neck turned red. "I have the matching one, it belongs to me," With that, he didn't ask again, he just reached out, prying the tags from Rooster's now slack hand.
