He should have realized when he first caught Jayce’s lips moving in a silent conversation, or when he noticed the way Jayce tilted his head to hear sounds that weren’t there, but he had been afraid, hadn’t wanted to shatter the fragile beginnings of whatever their life was becoming after nearly ending the world.

Jayce rarely speaks now, after everything, except to converse with people that aren't there. No matter how far his mind may drift, Viktor will still care for him.

Summary
He runs his fingernail through the frosted fractals, accumulating the cold under the crescent of nail he’s managed to grow since the last time Viktor cut them. There’s ice there too, the silence between them another tiny death. It’s not Viktor's fault that he can’t speak, that the mask that splits his face prevents it, or that Jayce is so terrified of the sound of Viktor’s projected voice in his head that the other man no longer tries to communicate.
Jayce and Viktor no longer resemble the people they once were, but that doesn't stop Viktor for finding ways to care for Jayce, even when he isn't certain that's what he wants.

Summary
He retrieves the mandolin from the floor and sets about pulling it from its case while Jayce eats.
“I thought it was beautiful,” he continues, “and I remembered seeing one in your apartment the night we met, so I was certain you could help me to learn to play it.”
There’s a wicked grin on his face, one that Jayce knows well. It’s the smile he had on his face the night they met, the one that promised everything if Jayce just reached out and took it. He’s not sure what Viktor is promising with his smile now, but despite all his doubts, Jayce knows already that he wants everything his partner could ever offer.

Jayce may have lost most of his hearing and a lot of his mobility, but Viktor helps remind him that not all new things have to hurt with the help of a mandolin.
