Nor is he a villain, finding their methods and goals distasteful. He just wants to live his own life. Rafe is the protagonist of his own history, and what others make of him is their problem.
(Sometimes the character development shoots past the villainy and reaches heroship again.
Or, the one where Rafe becomes an accidental hero by just being his ruthless, sour self.)
