As Reid breached the building with the rest of the team, he couldn't help but draw similarities to his own childhood. He had a schizophrenic mom, and was the same age as these boys when the weight of taking care of her was put entirely on his shoulders. He had almost been killed by his mom under her delusions on him being sent by the government and not his real son multiple times. It was partially why he became a good hostage negotiator and profiler, he was already used to talking down his mom and picking up on almost imperceptible differences in her body language to gauge her mood.
