When Jason Todd died on that fateful April day, Bruce was tempted to just... stop. To let the world know he was Batman, and that it'd just lost a hero in Jason Todd.
And so he did.
It didn't keep him from mourning the death of his son.
Or: Bruce quits being Batman in the wake of Jason's death, tells the world who he is, then retires to Montana and slowly finds healing. And when Jason comes back to life six months later, and Talia tells him 'you remain unavenged,' he can't find any evidence to support that, so he goes home.

“I’m sorry, sir,” the woman at the counter says. “We just rented our last car.”
“Of course you did,” Napoleon sighs. That would be just his luck.
“But he did say he was headed to New York too,” she continues. “Maybe you could work something out with him?”
She nods to someone behind him, and Napoleon can’t quite quash the absurd hope bubbling up in his chest as he turns. He doesn’t care who this guy is, he can charm anyone, and he’s pretty sure he could put up with anything—
Oh, shit.
(After an inauspicious first encounter, Napoleon and Illya find themselves sharing a rental car on a cross-country road trip two days before Christmas. It should be a question of whether they can get to New York in one piece. Instead, the question becomes: are they ready to say goodbye when they get there?)

Summary
Something about him draws the eye. There are five men skating in the practice rink, four days before the official opening of the games, but Napoleon’s gaze follows only one of them as he glides effortlessly across the ice. Perfectly controlled, not a step out of place, even in practice. Perhaps Napoleon’s recent fascination—no, merely a casual interest, thank you—can be attributed to his search for a break in the skater’s icy exterior. Some sign that the man is human, that he has hopes and dreams and feelings like the rest of them. Not that it really matters, they’re not in direct competition, but it bothers him nonetheless.
(Yes, it's an Olympic Figure Skating AU. Do I need to say more? Featuring secret training sessions, falling in love with the last person you should, and learning how to lose control.)
