Kaveh held his breath and approached the thing quietly. His right hand was behind his back, palm open, ready to summon Mehrak. His other hand carefully took the end of the blanket, and then, with one swift motion, he snatched it with all his might, making the blanket fly a few meters from the bed, and the ‘creature’ gasped.
Wait, no it wasn’t a fung–
By the archons.
A small child - no older than five - jolted on the bed, utterly shocked from Kaveh’s action.
His gray hair was a mess, partly due to Kaveh’s fault from roughly yanking the blanket that was covering his head, even the little sprout on top of his head was still bouncing from the impact. His wide, emerald eyes were full of tears. His round cheeks and nose were red from crying.
Kaveh blinked.
This little boy was easily the cutest kid he’d ever seen. Moreover, his appearance reminded him a lot of…
“Haitham?”Or, Alhaitham turned into a five year-old child right on Kaveh's birthday.

Kaveh couldn’t understand how any of this had to do with him. The two haven’t spoken to each other in years. He was worried, yes, but an accident? Alhaitham doesn’t get into accidents. He wouldn’t put himself into a situation like that.
“We checked his hospital records and you were listed as his emergency contact.”

Summary
Alhaitham wears his noise-cancelling headphones for a variety of reasons. People assuming you're busy listening to music or a recording of a lecture makes it much easier to avoid them, that's one of them. Tuning out of boring conversations in broad daylight is also a benefit Haitham very much appreciates. One reason he doesn't like to talk about though, is that he needs an out when his brain decides it'd be fun to try and process all of the sensory input of the world at once. He needs to be grounded, he needs the silence.
It's a shame when his trusted device picks a busy day to give up on him.

Summary
Just as Kaveh turns away from the orange tree, Alhaitham’s mother blooms into a heartfelt laugh, a soft and melodic sound like the distant ringing of wind chimes. And he realizes that Alhaitham inherited his mother’s laugh, too.
“You truly love him,” she says in between chuckles. “Deeply and devastatingly so.”
Kaveh can’t help but burst into laughter himself, “Am I really that obvious?”
She nods, “You want to marry my son.”
“I do.”
Before proposing, Kaveh decides to find a way to meet with Alhaitham's family in order to properly ask for Alhaitham's hand in marriage.

Summary
He turns around and Kaveh is there, confused and bleeding out in his worry.
“Are you okay?” He asks like a plea. His fingers twitch against the urge to reach out—Al-Haitham knows by now that it is one way he expresses his love. As if the love itself is not enough, as if it cannot be felt unless it is drawn into skin, gauged into the heart. But, Kaveh knows him too, and knows that even a touch borne from love would be too much, would splinter him apart, so he restrains himself. That restraint brings Al-Haitham back to himself, just for a moment. Just long enough to look at Kaveh and see Kaveh.
Al-Haitham opens his mouth. The words almost don’t come—he can feel them, sinking into his stomach, dying, or perhaps hiding away, too tired to fold into sound. But, miraculously, he opens his mouth and something comes out.
“…need to cover the flowers.”

Or, in his weaker moments, small things remind Al-Haitham of his grandmother, and suddenly, he is made of grief.

So, if Kaveh wasn’t so ignorant, he would’ve noticed those days when Alhaitham does agree to tag along, plays Genius Invocation TCG with Cyno for five rounds straight and drinks with them until he forgets that he is Alhaitham, the lonely. He tricks himself into believing that just like any other human, he too has companions.

Alhaitham gathers up the courage to peek open his eyes. He opens them just in time to see something in Kaveh’s face shift again, softening even further, becoming something so tender that it hurts to look at. Alhaitham closes his eyes again.
“Oh,” Kaveh whispers, leaning in and placing a kiss on Alhaitham’s forehead. When he pulls back, his voice is so impossibly soft. “You’re just so little, aren’t you, Hayi?”

Alhaitham stares at the note. It’s still stuck on the lunchbox Kaveh uses for him. His handwriting is beautiful still, because there was no way Kaveh would be caught dead with hideous handwriting. It was a recent note Kaveh left, and Alhaitham doesn’t have the heart to throw it out. So he leaves it stuck on the cabinet.
He leaves it with all the other notes he’s been keeping since Kaveh moved out.
I’m making falafel tonight, so you better come home.
I spent a lot of time on this, so you better appreciate it.
Come home early tonight, I’m planning on making desserts.

For a long moment, he looked back at Lumine with a sense of passivity lingering on his face as he continued not to speak. As his mouth opened, there was a certain glint in his eyes, a ghost of what was once ferity.
Bitter, it almost seemed bitter in a way. His gaze trained back on the traveler; there was no denying the way it was harshly cold around the edges, not at her, but clearly at a certain notion that her question had brought up.
“Well, I’d simply learn how to swim.”

Ever since the death of his grandmother, Alhaitham has lived his life alone and has grown comfortable being stuck within his own independency. There was no need for anyone else's interference after all, if he couldn't help himself, then no one else could either. A genetic disease abruptly turning his life upside down, he struggles with its new tolls to his independence and the looming dread that came with the thought of having to rely on another.

Summary
Despite it being a dream, the sickening knowledge that Kaveh might be gone or dead, still lingered in the back of his mind. He was completely ignoring the fact that the eerily clean room, the fogged vision, was all just a fragment of his mind playing tricks on him.
The ringing pain was irrelevant right now. He had to find Kaveh— needed to find Kaveh otherwise panic would grip at his heart forever.
