Summary
Qifrey has spent his entire life wishing to die, which—as a vampire cursed with eternal life—is a difficult thing to accomplish. He has also spent just as long believing humans incapable of kindness.
So when he is sent to spy on a professor, who is infuriantingly kind and hopelessly devoted to finding the creature that took his missing apprentice, it shakes everything Qifrey thought he knew.
Unfortunately, they also keep serving him tea and pie.
Things go downhill from there.

Tetia directed a disappointed glare at him. “Honestly Master Olly, how could you?”
A flash of panic gripped his chest. “Don’t tell me I forgot one of your birthdays,” he groaned. He put his head in his hands, covering his face. Tetia’s birthday surely wasn’t for a few more weeks and Qifrey’s another month or so after that. He couldn’t be that off on his calendar, and everyone else had theirs already this year, he’d swear by it.
“I think you might have forgotten your own, dear.”
Post-tree, Olruggio's been a little pre-occupied to remember he's turning thirty.

From a small neat stack on top of the cabinet, Olruggio grabs a piece of paper, scrawls a casting seal on it, and places it inside. A wheel starts turning and the sound of music starts playing.
Jaunty notes fill the space, and the way Olruggio starts to sway to the tune makes Qifrey’s head spin.

Olruggio observes the other sigh and pinch the bridge of his nose where his rounded glasses rest, pushing them up slightly and lifting his fringe. He catches a glimpse of the scarred tissue around his eye, but in a moment the view is gone. Qifrey sets down his belongings and signs into the school desktop in a flash. Olruggio watches from his periphery while pretending to read the slides on his screen. He wants to keep talking to Qifrey despite finding him utterly frigid. It's a procrastination tactic, of course.
