It's early in the morning when Max receives a weird message on his phone "You are gonna make Charles win the race on Sunday, or he dies". Max dismisses it at first, choosing not to fall for the joke, scam, or whatever it was.
But the messages continue through the whole week, attached with various pictures of Charles, taken from a distance. Charles walking in public, Charles training, Charles sleeping. Pictures that were nowhere on the internet or in magazines, he checked.
Come Saturday night and the news reports someone has broken into Charles's hotel room and stolen just one thing: his bracelets. Sunday morning, those bracelets appear in Max's backpack.
The race arrives and Max is certain the threats are probably serious.

When betrayal runs rampant like an epidemic, one must cover his mouth with love and his nose with respect. Infidelity is a fickle game, with so much at stake. One must not gamble upon compassion, for once it’s lost there is no coin on earth that can bring it back.
To lose something, one must truly love it. And to truly love it, he must set it free.
The bird that does not return to its cage is a free bird, but to live without a home is the biggest burden of all. To grow is to leave behind, and yet the more you lose the more you stand to gain. One must choose wisely what to gamble upon for what you have is what you stand to lose and what you’ve lost you can’t amend. To bid farewell is the most bittersweet song of all, growing in one’s throat like a rose garden. The next step must be taken with utmost caution, lest you run back coughing up the thorns.
