Summary
Will falls out of the chariot, eight entire times. There’s nothing funnier than watching him lose his shit at a splintered pile of wood that was once a carriage, helmet thrown to the ground in a fit of rage, accent so thick he’s literally incomprehensible. Nico never gets to see him like this. His stomach actually hurts from laughter on several occasions.
Slowly, though, he starts to get the hang of it. He’s fast, after all, and quick to observe, to respond; the other teams struggle to land hits on him, in practice runs, and sabotage is difficult when your opponent seems to have an almost prophetic gift to see things coming.
He can’t, however, steel himself to hit back.
And therein lies the trouble.
“For fuck’s sake, Will, I’m not asking you to kill anybody,” Clarisse snaps. “You need to get your head in the game!”
Will’s shoulders curl defensively. “I know! I’m trying! It’s just —” He kicks at their broken wheel, in two clean pieces on the ground. “Do no harm.”
“Do some harm. Or I’m gonna kick your ass.”

“One of each!?” He heard Kayla shout confused.
“I reckon we are gonna need them if we don’t want the whole camp to catch eradicated shit. We have a patient from the 30s, remember?”
It wasn’t as loud, so Nico couldn’t make the words up as well, but Kayla said something that sounded slightly like “oh, Gods” and had a bit of “how did we miss that?,” as well as some cussing into it.
“I’m fixing to leave to his cabin!” Will shouted in the direction of the door, having moved to put on some gloves and a mask. “He’s got measles.”
Or. . . When Nico gets sick and Will looks after him.

Will continues -- something. Doing something. Cecil walks around him, elbowing at least two people out of the way, and grabs both his wrists, waiting until he stops struggling.
"Get off."
"Will. I'm serious. Enough is enough."
Any other day, Will would twist out easy. Cecil knows it. Lotta folks think Will is some -- some goober, who can't hold his own, but Cecil grew up with the fucker. He was there when he gained two clean feet of height in one summer. He was there as the muscle developed. It was infuriating. He knows just how nasty Will's left hook can be.
He also knows the migraines make him weak.
"People. Busy. Get off."

Will usually filled the air with whatever rambling was on his mind, whatever music he was in the mood for, or occasionally, off-tune humming that Nico held close to his heart. If not him then someone else would burst in, usually his siblings wanting to settle some argument and use their big brother as their tie-breaker–
But that’s the problem.

Naomi had just got the first payout of her newest summer single that week, and she’d promised him anything he wanted at the market – which, really, didn’t help his indecision. He’d picked out – a few apples, the really shiny ones, and some bread for his Nana, and even a whole basket of vegetables, because those were good, and – and something else, he’s sure. There’d been a whole stall dedicated to just this thing, and Will had never even considered that there could be multiple types of it, and – sticky, sweet, slow-moving.
