“Okay.” A smirk twitched at the edge of Gideon’s mouth. “You know, normally, when a hot person tells me to get undressed so they can touch my body, it’s in a very different context.” Immediately, her yellow eyes went wide with regret. “I mean… oh god, I’m sorry. I’m nervous. That’s not an excuse, I know. I’m very sorry. You can tell me if you want me to leave right now, and I’ll go and pay you and everything. I–”

Your perfect match, the test results read, and Blake's name imprints in its bold, black type against the backs of her eyelids. Honestly, neither of them are even remotely surprised. It's been two years. An official excuse doesn't make it any easier, until it does.
Do you know what this means? Blake asks.
Yeah, Yang says. I'm so in love with you that even a fucking machine can tell. Ugh.

“You need to be fucked this time?” she breathed, and even with this, even with the burning between them - the hurt feelings and the awful words and the misunderstandings, Vi checked in.
“Yes,” Caitlyn hissed, and Vi’s grip tightened, making Caitlyn squeak. Vi leaned even further, icy blue eyes becoming Caitlyn’s entire world as she lowered her voice to a growl.
“Yes, what?”

Summary
Vi ignored him as movement outside the window caught her eye and she leaned over to see what it was. Her neighbor looked up, their eyes meeting for a brief second. A scowl appeared on the young woman’s face and Vi quickly moved away from the window and took her seat again at the drumset.
“Fuck me,” she mumbled.
Ever since her neighbor had moved in a couple of months ago, it had been nothing but complaint, complaint, complaint. She hated Vi’s music, she hated her friends. She hated the way Vi’s cooking smelled (when she had the misfortune of burning it once or twice). She had threatened to call the landlord when Vi flipped her off after a petty argument about whose responsibility it was to bring the trash cans to the curb. Vi couldn’t stand her.- Language:

Summary
It wasn’t an earth-shattering kaboom, or an upheaval of her life, or any other dramatic nonsense she’d heard from Jayce and Viktor, from Claggor and Mylo about the searching for and the discovering of love. It wasn’t this moment of lucidity, a thunderstrike of passion and feeling that overcame her senses and pointed her home. If anything, it was understated, quiet, a simple pleasure.
It was an exhalation.

How much difference does a single sound make? If a dropped item clattering to the floor can change the lives of dozens of people and shape the future of an entire city, what might happen instead if that object didn't fall? Are some relationships fated to happened? Are some tragedies doomed to take place? What can be gained, and what would be lost, from the absence of a single noise?

“No,” Caitlyn whispers, shoulders slipping. Oh, she’s not strong enough for this. “No, no- you- why you? Why you?”
She still smells the way she did two years ago— standing at their doorstep, packing her bags, saying we shouldn’t have done this. I shouldn’t have done this.
“Why me,” Vi repeats. “Isn’t that the fucking question.”

Summary
The woman at the bar has been pretending not to watch Vi for the last hour. Usually, Vi would be the last person to object – the woman is around her age, with sharp, focused eyes and a mouth Vi would love to get a begrudging smile out of – but it isn’t the first time she’s seen her. Not just in The Last Drop, either. The woman always has that same, calculated focus, and is constantly glancing down to write in the notebook she always carries.

Summary
The wilds of Remnant hold history. (Ancient memories in fallen stone, foregone whispers filtered through the leaves of great oaks, the ghost of a touch carried by the breath of the wind.) Yang wakes one hundred years after catastrophe and must collect the pieces of her own past as she moves through places she can’t quite remember, searching for the people she loved a lifetime ago. Some things are stronger than the gaps cleaved by loss, and she will fight for a princess she recalls only in fragments, long before she fully understands why.

"As soon as she saw who the client was, her words died in her throat. Her drink slipped out of her hand a second later, but Catra couldn’t bring herself to care about the stain it would leave in the carpet.
Across the table from her boss, wearing a perfectly-tailored suit that looked more expensive than most of Catra’s tuition payments, was Adora.
As in, that Adora. The one Catra dated for all of college.
The one that broke her heart four and a half weeks before graduation.
The one that, according to what she’d said on the last day Catra had seen her, had fallen out of love with her."
Or, six years ago, Adora and Catra were college students in love. Then, in one fateful meeting at a coffee shop, Adora broke Catra's heart.
Now Catra's a junior partner at a law firm handling a patent dispute for Adora's family company. The two of them have to re-enter the other's life in an attempt for closure, catharsis, and connection.

Summary
"You’re a virgin,” Gideon said, testing it out. "Huh."
Harrow didn’t like the sound of that huh. She knew Gideon’s noises, and that was a thoughtful, sinister huh. That was the same huh she’d made before putting canned tuna in Crux’s work boots.
Her eyes narrowed. “What.”
Gideon cocked her head to the side. “Is there a reason you’re waiting?” There was no judgement in the question— only genuine curiosity.
Perhaps it was this that made Harrow more inclined to answer. “I don’t have the time to look for someone new,” She shrugged. “And my available pool is… somewhat limited.”
“Well,” Gideon said, with just a hint of conspiracy in those glittering golden eyes. “If you ever want to change that, you have my number.”
What? What?
Harrow blinked. “What?”

“There’s something you need to know,” Harrow said to John and Mercymorn. She locked eyes with Gideon, holding her gaze firm.
White-ringed eyes flicked between them, and a frown flickered on John’s face. “Alright.”“Well, it’s interesting that you’ve chosen to tell me about the visa application now,” Harrowhark said, turning to John and Mercymorn, “when Gideon only proposed last weekend.”
John blinked. He looked between them. “Excuse me?”
“I’m getting married,” Harrowhark said.
“To who?” John asked.
“To my assistant,” said Harrow, ignoring the choking, strangled noise of surprise Gideon made from the door. “To Gideon Nav. We’re engaged.” She paused, then stood. “Aren’t we, Griddle?”
“No,” Gideon said, because she was the worst. “What the fuck?”
Or: Harrowhark Nonagesimus is the youngest editor ever to run the Ninth House publishing company. But when Harrow violates the terms of her work visa, her only way to retain her job is to marry a US citizen— and who better than her assistant, Gideon Nav?

She feels like he’s peeling every layer of her being, one by one by one. And when he gets to her bones, he’ll find something she’ll never be able to run away from.
“…you,” the stranger says, his hands flexing into fists. Unclenching again. “You are…”
Gideon holds her breath. She doesn’t know why she thinks so, but it seems to her that Harrow does as well.
The corner of the man’s lips twitches up in a smile.
“You’re the spitting image of your mother.”
