When he rounds the corner to the kitchen, he sees Kory leaning over the counter, phone pressed to her ear as she sighs heavily. “Gar…” She starts, voice a little shaky. “Look, I know that you were upset last night and… maybe I should’ve pushed more, should’ve made you talk to me but…” She pauses, swallowing hard as Dick’s whole body deflates, leaning with his back against the wall so she can’t see him, just listening to her tortured voice. “Whatever’s happened, you have a family here that loves you and we’ll do anything to help you, no matter what it is. We’re your home, Gar. So, I don’t know what’s going on with you; maybe you’re scared or grieving or lonely… but don’t leave us, okay? Just come home.”

Honestly, Gar had no idea. He wanted to talk about everything, but something about letting someone know about the painful memories scared him. He supposed that maybe it was because it would interfere with his goofy, happy-go-lucky facade; maybe others would look at him differently. Not that Dick wouldn’t understand. But Gar just wasn’t ready to fully face this head on. He supposed it probably wasn’t the best to keep it inside all bottled up, but that’s what he’d always done. He isn’t sure he likes the circus much these days, it seems so much colder and lonelier than when he was growing up despite most of the people staying the same. Maybe he’s the problem. The broken thing that can’t be fixed as easily as a snapped bar after a fateful performance. But the circus is all he has, it’s his home, the only one he has left after his parents died and Dick can’t seem to let it go. Doesn’t know who he’ll be if not this.
Dick Grayson is lost, an acrobat at the circus going through the motions and pretending he’s fine but then he meets three people who will change his life forever. People who will show him that being lost means being found.
