After a fight, Alhaitham has a nightmare where he loses Kaveh entirely. Waking brings no relief - only a fear he can't shake, pushing him toward Kaveh's door while praying he hasn't already gone too far.
Instantly withdrawn, Kaveh rose to his feet, silently gathered his blueprints, and turned his back. Dragging a hand over his face, Alhaitham reached for the gentler words he should’ve used in the first place to try and undo the damage - but Kaveh cut him off with a quiet 'leave me alone' and retreated into his bedroom without a backward glance.
It hadn’t even been an insult, but it was somehow all the more piercing for its bare simplicity. In one solitary sentence, Alhaitham heard the echo of every fear he carried about himself - incapable of the softness required to hold something as bright as Kaveh’s trust without breaking it into pieces.

They meet face to face, and Kaveh now sees that his roommate has dark rings under his eyes, as well as a general weariness in his stance. He knows that the question might be cruel, and might be too much for this current moment.
The air is heavy with words they both didn’t say, whether they chose not to or were too afraid to.
The sages have been overthrown, and Kaveh is back in Sumeru City.

Taking the necklace from Kaveh with a lingering brush of their fingers, he stepped close and suddenly, Kaveh was realizing why asking for Alhaitham's help was a very, very bad idea.
The air turned heavy as Alhaitham laid the necklace around his neck, making sure that the pendant rested on the warmed skin right above his heart.
Then, without breaking eye contact, he leaned down and pressed a reverent kiss on Kaveh's nape—so featherlight that Kaveh wondered if he was imagining things—just above the clasp of the necklace.

Lately, Kaveh's schedule had become a little bit more regular. Just a little. He tended to meet clients in the morning, now; and while he still socialized late into the night—those who worked in his field, or adjacent to it, were not known for their regular hours—nowadays he did not step out of Lambad's so late that the night was blending into morning, that away from Sumeru City's raucous taverns and bars the air was suffused with such dead quiet that his steps, his breaths as he stumbled home seemed to roar in his ears.
... There was no particular reason for this newly regular routine. Or at least, no particular good reason.
Really. There wasn't.
Alhaitham has been giving Kaveh kisses on the cheek—one when he leaves the house, another when he returns.
