“Ah, you would look better cleaned up,” Rex laments through a drag of his cigarette. Jordan is still frozen, any possible words now dead in his mouth. His ear rings, a sort of phantom pain now. “Shave, and cut your hair, maybe put on a suit when you can afford one.” Jordan feels a dormant twitch of anger that he quickly suppresses. It’s best not to show Rex that he still has the capacity to get on his nerves. "And... take a shower."

As Rex is on the concrete, blood dripping from his nose and mouth, he thinks of the birds. In his mind, he grabs onto them and squeezes, holds them so tight their eyes pop out and roll down onto the crisp green grass. He’s never held a gun before, but he imagines firing one, watching the lightning-fast bullet rip through the sparrow. The pain is unbearable, but he doesn’t go to the dean, or even the nurse. While he tends to his wounds, alone, he only thinks one thing:
