Summary
After two and a half semesters at Samwell, Dex has gotten used to people handling their stress in weird ways. Bitty bakes up a storm, Lardo is constantly covered in what Dex really, really hopes is paint, Ransom turns into a curled-up ball of anxiety on the nearest flat surface. He gets it: people are just weird here.
That doesn’t mean he doesn’t choke on his Red Bull when Nursey sighs, “God, I’m so tense right now. I just really need to suck a dick, y’know?”
(Or: five times Dex and Nursey really don’t quite know what they’re doing, and one time they’ve really, really figured it out.)

Scott couldn’t help but laugh a little at that, and some of the tension seemed to leave Wallace’s face as well. “Try me,” Scott said goodnaturedly.
“There’s this thing called shotgunning,” Wallace said. “Pretty much, one person breathes in a hit, and then, they breathe out the secondhand into the other person’s mouth. It’s less harsh after it’s been in someone else’s lungs, in my experience.”
That didn’t sound incredibly gay to Scott. Sure, a little, especially if the lips touched, but really, it was smart—weed could get expensive, Scott imagined, and that’s a two-for-one deal. Twice the amount of high people. Genius, really.
So, he said so: “Makes sense. That’s just practical.”
Wallace’s eyebrows, though mostly obscured by his bangs, absolutely raised. “I’m glad you think so,” he said slowly.

Marion’s footfalls were heavy; she felt more than heard them. He saw what Jean held, yanked the door closed, and took hold of her by the shoulders. Jean tore her gaze away from the card and saw in Marion’s eyes her own hollowness reflected.
He had not seen this.
Marion had lost his premonitions, and Jean knew, just as she knew it about herself, that he could not stand to lose more than that. For her part, Jean was cold inside, but not in a way that would make her shake. Her hands were steady. The train had faded. She folded the card and placed it back in the envelope.
Very gently, without allowing their fingers to touch, Marion took the envelope from her. He tucked it inside his waistcoat over his heart. Then his eyes searched hers, solemn and resigned to what they would have to do. “Do we have time,” he asked softly, “to get Nathaniel and Auntie Bee?”

Whatever you did in the last year, Sean Finnerty, they must have been better deeds than all twenty-two years before that; watch yourself, since you’ll never be able to replicate them.
Not Jean, whose strength was her mind, whose whole world went ass over bayonet these past few months, unrecognizable from the last thing she remembered. They couldn’t hold her now. “She’s got to do it on her own,” Sean sighed. “She can handle it.”
Marion spoke so quietly that Sean felt the words through his back more than he heard them. “What if it never comes back to her?”
That was the slippery dark thing down at the root of this that Sean couldn’t face yet. “Then we do it all over again."

Sean came up behind him then, and slipped his right hand into Marion’s back pocket.
Marion moved fast—faster than he thought he could anymore, since the night of the lighthouse when some of the fight went out of him. He turned counterclockwise and seized Sean, both hands grasping the hair at the back of his head, and stared him down a minute. Sean didn’t blink.
It would be good to hold each other. The evening’s work had been grueling, and the artifact they recovered could have done much worse to any of them than robbing Sean of his voice. Marion still had tension stored up, clearly.
And as for Sean, Marion could see, now that he was close, how badly he needed to be put to use.
He kissed Sean, rough on purpose. What would have been a grunt came out as a huff of air instead. Sean’s tongue pressed into Marion’s mouth—yes—and then he pulled away, gave Marion a warning look, and pointed at the ceiling. He was right. They shouldn’t keep Jean waiting.

Marion gasps awake, disoriented and dizzy as he half falls out of bed, the bleed flower mark on his chest pulsing like a heartbeat. Part of him dimly notes that he fell asleep with his shoes on, that the apartment is still dark, no hint of light against the curtains. Then he’s stumbling toward the door, grabbing his old army pack on the way, settling the familiar weight on his shoulders because— you always make sure your gear is ready to go you never know when you have to move— and then he’s out the door, pounding down the stairs and out into the night, the hum of electrical wires loud overhead.
It would take the better part of an hour to fetch Jean and bring her back here, might take even longer for Marion to find anyone else. It’s a twenty minute leisurely stroll to reach Sean’s apartment, he doesn’t know how fast he can get there in a run. With every footfall, every breath, every heartbeat, a question echoes. Was it just a nightmare or a premonition?
