Todoroki Shoto is a prodigy. Some see his prowess in fighting and academics, a perfect quirk accompanied by his cold facade and think him arrogant, a brat, lucky. What they don't see is Shoto being one year old and already running through exercises too taxing for his small body. Shoto being two and running through kata that have no place in a toddler. Being three and already burning and freezing with a power that only brings him pain. Four and reading through medical textbooks that he shouldn't be able to understand, much less need. Five and burning under both of his parents. Six, seven, eight, nine, ten and eleven and burning in the training room with a bedroom filled with textbooks and blood stained floors. They see his prowess but they don't see that the boy applying to UA is too small, twelve years old and already broken.
Some do see. Those used to fading into the background and watching notice that he is not cold but confused, not rude but awkward. They see that he could take down most pro-heroes but doesn't know how to play or hold a conversation. Todoroki Shoto is a prodigy but he isn't arrogant or a brat and he most certainly isn't lucky.

The only thing I lost was my skunk Skippy….and my sanity. I’m still alive though! Sure, I can’t ever see my friends and family again, and I don’t have a job any more, and all my stuff is gone, and I’m a wanted criminal -but I’m still alive. And that’s what matters right?”
Convincing himself that everything is fine when the world is falling apart around him was a skill he earned in the military. It was a bit sad that he’d need to fall back on that skill years after his discharge, and in an entirely different world full of meta humans at that.
