Alhaitham has maintained the image of a cold and rational being so carefully that it was almost impossible to look behind the mask and see the truth. Only he knew that he was barely holding on.___
"You can't survive on books alone", Kaveh always told him. Alhaitham finally understands the meaning of these words, but it is already too late. His loneliness has carved his insides out and left him hollow. The severity of his depression goes unnoticed by everyone, including the scribe until it is too late to recover. Kaveh will be proven right once more. Alhaitham won't survive this.

Kaveh stares, like he’s picking Alhaitham apart with a single solemn stare. At that moment, he's not Kaveh who often gets drunk to forget about his own problems, waiting for Alhaitham in the tavern to come and drag him back to their home, to drunkenly throw empty insults at the younger for not understanding his ideals on the way. It's Kaveh who graduated top of his class, who made no enemies, approaching every single student in the Akademiya to make friends. It's Kaveh with a heart of gold, his senior who was kind enough to approach the arrogant kid in the library.
After the Akasha shut down and let the people of Sumeru dream again, Alhaitham experiences his first ever nightmare.

Summary
From an early age, Alhaitham's grandmother had taught him how to properly treat his own injuries. In general, she always encouraged Alhaitham to be independent, so it came about quite naturally that Alhaitham would simply attend to himself whenever he got hurt.
Alhaitham could easily take care of himself, so why was Kaveh bothering? The situation was so bizarre that it didn't even occur to Alhaitham to resist. He only silently watched his senior work, fascinated.

“The footsteps grew closer, momentarily quiet. Alhaitham took a breath and let it out, slow, at the prospect of another dramatic scene. He needed to ensure Azar believed he wasn’t faking. If Azar finds out he was pretending, the entire plan is ruined, and his life would be in extreme danger. He must pretend, no matter what. The footsteps draw close, then stop outside of the door.
“No…Alhaitham? Is that really you?” Kaveh asks shakily, and his heart plummets to the ground.”

Alhaitham knows that the entire plan depends entirely on Azar believing he was no longer a threat. Unfortunately for him, Azar has no reservations in his cruelty to test his resolve.
Kaveh was having a pretty good week overall - spoiled quickly by the knowledge that his roommate, best friend and love interest had irrevocably lost his mind.
