The first time Dr Michael Robinavitch encounters Detective Jack Abbot is on a Tuesday afternoon outside Central Seven. Jack has a black eye and tension in his shoulders from being on high alert.
It's not the last time they meet.
Jack continues to come into the ED with suspicious injuries, and as their friendship grows, Jack refuses to let Robby in and tell him what's really going on. Robby is convinced something bad is going to happen to the person he's started to fall for, and he feels powerless to stop it.

Summary
"Dr. Robby? Why don't you just make Mr. Jack a new leg?"
Jack blinked, brows raised and looked from Trinity over to Robby, gauging his husband's reaction. Unfortunately, the poor man looked like he had been caught entirely off-guard in that specific way only five-year-olds manage; when you're not used to their out-of-pocket nonsense."That's- uh… that's a very good question. It's actually a lot more complicated than-"
"My lizard's tail grew back when it fell off," Frank interrupted Robby, and Jack wasn't sure if the flat, absolute confidence of someone spitting straight facts was meant to undermine Robby or help him out.
Jack has taught kindergarten classes for years now. Twenty-two five-year-olds do not scare him anymore.
Robby, on the other hand, has never been more nervous in his life.
Turns out explaining trauma medicine to a room full of five-year-olds is a lot harder than actively practicing it.- Language:

Summary
Robby has known Jack for ten long years, long enough that, standing with him in this empty OR just hours before his sabbatical begins, he thinks he could picture him perfectly with his eyes closed, could draw him from memory if only he knew how to draw. He knows the crooked pull of Jack’s smile when he’s pleased with himself, the way his mouth twists and purses when his hands are busy, the thin, hard line it becomes when he’s angry. He knows this face. He knows this man. He loves him.
Somehow, it’s never occurred to Robby to think about kissing him until this very moment. And, with a two-thousand mile ride to Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump ahead of him, it occurs to him now that he may not get another chance.

Summary
"Robby was pretty out of it when he got here, so we gave him fluids and stabilized him as best we could, but once he regained consciousness, he's been noncooperative. You're his sexual health contact, so I figured you could step in."
All the breath left Jack, the room going cold at one more shock to the system. "But—I'm his emergency contact," he tried, because maybe the kid had misunderstood. He and Robby had talked about being emergency contacts, of course. But a lot of people didn't even list sex contacts because they weren't commonly needed, so registration treated them as optional. Jack didn't have one. Robby had never said a word about that.
Which made sense because he and Jack weren't fucking like that.

Summary
At the nods all around, Robby rubbed his hands together. "Great. Dr. Shen is going to walk residents through handoff. Before that, any questions?"
Santos raised her hand, but didn't wait to be called on: "Yeah, what's up with you wearing a wedding ring?"
It went off like a shot, a few gasps and mutters sounding out, Princess and Perlah leaning close, Jesse's eyebrows rising. Robby just stared at Santos for a silent beat, then turned to Shen. "Dr. Shen, if you'll start us off."
Ever unfazed, Shen simply bobbed his head. "Cool."

Summary
Robby finally piped up: "Kind of a shame, though. Guy seemed like your type."
Jack felt himself wanting to bristle, quickly controlling it. Because what the fuck. They'd been entirely wrapped up in each other in the years since Pittfest, Robby finally going to therapy, letting them get more serious than the fuckbuddy deal they'd had going before that. Jack had thought things were going well. "I have a type?" he challenged, raising his eyebrows.

Summary
Two-fifteen on a Friday afternoon, and the kitchen was the best thing Robby owned.
Not literally. Literally he owned eleven percent of it, and eleven percent of the exhaust hood, and eleven percent of the mortgage on the exhaust hood, which was a fact he tried to look at no more than once a day. But at two-fifteen the burners were cold and the lights were on half and the only sound in the building was the walk-in cycling on and off like something asleep, and at two-fifteen the kitchen was his in every way that wasn't accounting.
He had his coffee. He had the board. He had, on the pass in front of him, the sheet of paper on which he had written TARTARE—??? four days ago and had not improved upon since.
He turned it face down.

Summary
The trick to Jack Abbot's coffee was that there wasn't one, and Robby had learned it anyway.
At a quarter to six Robby was at the counter, hair still wet, scrub top inside-out, half-assembled for the day shift, when Jack wandered in. He had no business being awake—it was his night off—but years of working nights had worn the ordinary hours smooth in him, and he'd never quite managed to sleep through Robby's side of the bed going cold. So he got up, the way he always did the mornings he was home, to stand in the kitchen and see the man off. His coffee was waiting on the counter—black, scalding, two sugars he'd deny to his grave that he took. Robby had made it, the way Robby made it every morning Jack was home to drink it: the one with somewhere to be looking after the one without. Jack picked it up without breaking stride, the way you'd pick up your own hand. He didn't say thank you. Thank you was for strangers. He bumped his shoulder into Robby's on the way to the window and that was the whole sentence, subject and verb and object: you, here, this.

Robby started watching them during his sabbatical, first in sketchy roadside motels and then once he was back in Pittsburgh from the comfort of his own bed: video after video on YouTube of people wearing N95 masks or even full-face respirators, cleaning hoarded houses at fast-forwarded speed.
