A shaky hand reached up and gazed fingertips on his temple. “I-if someo-one had to . . . die. I r-rath-er it . . . be . . . me.” Dan tried to smile reassuring but the blood on his teeth was anything but. Chest twitched hard with a breath that it wouldn’t take. Wet eyes closed without permission before the flashing lights came within view. Everything went limp and was growing ice cold.
