Clark could see the hurt on Lex’s face all too clearly. It was painful to watch him connect the dots. He knew how much Lex hated Superman—and yet he’d still gone along with what they had. Because he loved him too much. The man standing on the other side of the glass cell was clearly distraught, hurt, and so angry. Angry at knowing who Clark was. Pressed against the cold glass, Clark felt his heart bleeding.
“You lied to me all the time, didn’t you, Clark?” Lex spat out his name like it was poison, scorching him from the inside. “Every. Single. Time.”
His eyes were so cold.
“Or should I call you Kal-El? Like the filthy alien you are?”
(AU! where a month before the movie, Clark Kent is sent to interview Lex Luthor. Neither of them expects it to go well—Clark resents the assignment, and Lex has nothing but contempt for anyone connected to Superman. But somehow… it works. Against all odds, they are drawn to each other.)

He knew how many years. He could still remember the first time he'd flipped a calendar page and felt nothing but dread. He could still remember almost everything.) Lex is used to the gladiator events. Hell he's hailed by the crowds a favorite for his rare appearances at charity events, donning a suit and fighting against other elite for the purposes of driving up ticket prices and tempting those not usually here to actually show up. He's proud of it actually, having the backing of the crowd and being popular which is important in his line of work.
What he's NOT used to... is to be overlooked in favor of some nobody from nowheresville.

"Leex-!" Bruce grins, already at least a goblet in, "Have you seen the new guy?"

And Lex turns his attention to the crowd. Where somebody would have noticed his bald head by now and started a schant, there's silent. ok, there is a low chant but it's not for him.

Their eyes meet. Superman appraises him silently. Tracks the emaciated planes of his face down to the sharp jut of his collarbones from under the neck of his shirt. Lex doesn’t let himself wish for a door to close, for a curtain to drop, for a blanket to pull over his head. He feels like a child. Terrified and sick about it.
“It’s Wednesday,” Superman says, voice low. Gentle, almost, as if Lex is some sort of stray animal, tense and shaking, primed to bite. Demeaning.
Lex is not shaking. He holds his breath for a moment, wills the rhythm of his lungs to slow. He concentrates the fear into disgust, into a single heated beam of hatred. There are protections in place. Contracts, laws. Lex is government property. Superman won’t — he won’t.
Nobody will touch Lex Luthor.

It had been an olive branch you offered him--a blanket apology for every time you'd been an asshole to him during his training or with his lessons--on the suggestion of The Ancient One herself. Perhaps the two of you aren't as different as you seem to believe. It had been the last lesson she taught you before she died.
His body language was rigid, his arms crossed tightly against his chest as he stared down at the city beneath the torrents of rain. Even if Wong hadn't asked you to check up on him, you would've known something was the matter immediately.
