To his left, a cluster of young men, barely old enough to be in here, were living their lives through their phone screens. They preened and posed, muscles straining against designer t-shirts, capturing manufactured moments of joy for an audience that wasn't here. Buck felt a surge of contempt so sharp and sudden it almost made him flinch. He’d been that young once, though his own brand of youthful idiocy had also involved running into burning buildings, not just perfecting a pout for Instagram.
To his right, a group of older men, their faces a roadmap of past disappointments, watched the younger crowd with a hungry, almost predatory nostalgia. They were looking for a night, an hour, a few minutes to feel like the men they used to be. Buck looked away. He was thirty-four, caught in the no-man’s-land between the two, and felt an uncomfortable kinship with both groups that made his skin crawl.
This was a mistake. He should have stayed home.

The fortress of Astera was a glorious, multi-level testament to human stubbornness, a city built from the wreckage of the First Fleet’s ships and the bones of the very monsters they hunted. Ropes and massive pulleys, thick as a man’s arm, crisscrossed the sky, their mechanisms groaning as they ferried supplies between the tiers. The roar of the Smithy’s forges was a constant, percussive heartbeat, its rhythm a comforting promise of stronger armor and sharper blades. The boisterous chatter and laughter from the Canteen spilled out into the open air, a wave of warmth and life that felt a world away from the deadly silence of a monster’s lair. Other Hunters, smiths, and scholars from the Commission bustled past, their faces smudged with soot, ink, or dried monster blood. Most gave Buck and Eddie a wide berth, their expressions a mixture of awe and fear. They were The Shield and The Handler. The Commander’s best. A living legend forged in blood and fire, and most days, it felt more like a heavy crown than a badge of honor.

Summary
After everything Buck and Eddie have gone through together, the marriage that was once just convenience is now real. They’re boyfriend-husbands, trying to figure out what their life looks like now that they’re dating and learning to be an actual couple.
However, trouble arises with the promised trip back home to El Paso for the summer. Eddie is not ready to come out to his parents and Buck supports him in that. Still, El Paso is not the place where either of them have been their best and tensions arise between them when having to exist in the influence sphere of the Diaz parents. Everything that has happened between them catches up as personal histories, insecurities and unresolved issues float back up to the surface.
AKA: The terrible, horrible, no good, very bad El Paso trip where Buck and Eddie's marriage of convenience has become a secret relationship instead.

Summary
Years before joining the 118, Buck’s travels take him to El Paso, where he meets Christopher. When Eddie comes back from Afghanistan and Shannon leaves, Buck ends up staying. As bills pile up, the best move is for them to get married, just for convenience, they’ll divorce when Eddie comes back from his re-enlistment.
Then Eddie gets injured and it’s just easier to stay married for a little longer, while Buck gets started at the 118. However, Buck doesn’t mention his ‘husband’ and kid, not feeling like they’re his to keep. When Eddie gets the offer from Bobby, they decide to lie and pretend they don’t know each other, so they can work together.
The whole lie gets out of hand as feelings start to become real, until it all comes to a head in the aftermath of the fire engine explosion.
AKA: Secret marriage of convenience buddie slow burn AU, where Buck and Eddie have been married for years so Buck could adopt Chris and no one at the 118 knows.
