“He looked down at the black and white pure ivory; his slender fingers ran across it with practised ease. Stiffly. Robotically. He pressed down on the keys harder and harder, but no matter how hard he slammed the keys, the sound was always muffled. He played purely by memory. Audibly, all he could hear was the hammer hitting the strings, but no music. The sound muffled by the water that filled his lungs and sucked the life from him. Drowning was all he’s ever known. All he did was drown, for Regulus Black had never learnt to swim or to try and fight against the tides for his own life.”
Regulus Black has been a famous competitive pianist since he was young. That is, until the death of his mother.
Since her passing, he no longer plays. Every note he plays sounds as if underwater. Until James Potter, the man that could rival the sun pulls him from the waves of his mind and helps him find the music again.

Summary
A small interaction between Regulus and Euphemia before his fifth year at Hogwarts alters the trajectory of his life. Asked to watch out for Regulus, James finds himself readily falling for him as they spend more time together. It can never be that simple though- the Black's expectations and dysfunction grasp onto the younger boy relentlessly, and the raging war outside the doors of Hogwarts moves closer to them every day.
Dealing with the hardships and traumas of their reality, the question remains: how far are they willing to go for one another?
Following the boys from their final years of Hogwarts into their roles during the First Wizarding War, this is a long fic exploring the depths of their devotion.
