“This is Keith,” Senior Blade Krolia chuckles. “She will join your group from now on.”
“Hello Keith, nice to meet you.” Shiro raises her hand in the Galran greeting gesture, earning her a confused expression from Keith. Shiro can read as much from the way Keith’s ears flinch and one of her eyebrows lifts upwards.
“Please don’t be gentle with her. She’s a tough one.” Krolia laughs, and Shiro is sure there’s a joke there that she doesn’t get. Especially when, suddenly, the new recruit has the audacity to nudge Senior Blade Krolia with her elbow.
“Mom, please.” Keith rolls her eyes, a dark shimmer around her purple cheeks.
Shiro blinks. “Mom?”

In the faint light of the bar, she recognizes the features of a woman, slender hips and dark hair.
And she’s carrying a boar on her shoulders.
It’s anything but elegant how Takako chokes on the sip of her drink, too loud for the silence in the tavern. She knows well how all eyes are on her – but the most important pair of eyes is piercing her from where the woman is standing in the threshold, a stern look on her face. She doesn’t say a word when she walks in, firm steps in Takako’s direction, never leaving her gaze.
She stops just a few inches in front of her, her eyes still piercing Takako. There’s barely enough time to save her glass from being crushed from the weight of the boar as the dead animal slams onto the counter.

Both of them begin their mage apprenticeships expecting to learn how to control their magic, but neither expects how much they'll change one another's lives or how deep their feelings for each other might grow over the course of a year.
