There was a fire; Renoir knew that much. The specifics had never mattered. Like a nightmare, the finer points had since faded. Renoir concerned himself with one thing: he’d been there. Verso lived. His little one would carry her scars the remainder of her life, but she lived too. He could ask no more than that.
Seven years after the fire, the nightmare began again. Only this time, Renoir could not wake. The Fracture shook the world apart. He stood powerless as the foundations of the earth crumbled.

Maelle enters near-soundlessly. When she’s done hanging up her coat, she takes short, measured steps as fast as one could reasonably call walking across the room, like she’s desperate to run, like she’s keeping herself back. She’s done this every day, whether Emma’s home or not, and so Gustave knows to put down the trinket he’s fiddling with and open his arms so the girl he’d die for a thousand times over can fall into them. She squeezes him close, cheek pressed against Gustave’s chest.
He can’t blame Maelle for searching for his heartbeat. He made her watch him die, after all. It’s the one thing he’ll never be able to atone for.
When she’s apparently satisfied, she lets go and brushes her vest off. She looks composed now, walled-off, but Gustave knows better, knows that her poise is a mask.
Maelle saved the world, but she doesn’t seem happy. Gustave tries to find out why.

Once Maelle fixed the canvas world, once she brought everyone back and offered them all their happy ending, there was still one person she couldn't bring herself to give the same gift to. But this was a happy ending, it had to be, for everyone.
And everyone included Renoir.
She brought him back to but made sure he still paid for what he did, she took something from him.
And when faced with the chance to have his faimly and his life back, the sacrifice of his eyesight seemed very small to him.----
Renoir centric fic where he's brought back in the Maelle ending. He's been blinded as vengeance by her but has a chance to fix old bridges and maybe build new ones.
