The beginning of the Great Cleansing was signaled by the slaughter of the Romanovs.

Summary
Hundreds of years ago, the Conjunction of the Spheres combined many worlds into one. Where once there was modern technology across the land, now there were wide expanses of magic and monsters winding in between which came to be known as the Wood.
Jaskier travels from his home in one of the last remaining Modern Cities to seek his Destiny in the Wood. After stumbling into a Witcher his first time out, he finds his new world to be dangerous and complicated. But his past follows him and he learns more about himself and where he came from as he moves forward towards something he doesn't understand.

Jaskier swirls his wine, eyes blank as they stare at the empty seat in front of him. He glances at his phone for the time before anxiously looking at the door. Still not there. Two hours late, a no-show. The appetizers grow cold, and Jaskier waves for the waiter to pack it up for him— the restaurant’s fucking expensive, and he’ll be damned before letting good food go to waste. He smiles at the waiter, not quite looking at him— can’t really take the pity in the man’s eyes as he whisks away the plate and returns with a brown bag with the restaurant’s sprawling cursive logo on its side.
Today was fucking special, a one-year anniversary that Geralt, stupidly hot, stupidly smart Geralt, had set up in a fancy-ass restaurant, an entire romantic night planned out…
Well, there was a reason no other relationship he’s been in has lasted longer than a month.
Or, Geralt gets caught up at work, and Jaskier gets stood up.

“Tell me about Geralt of Rivia, The Butcher of Blaviken, you fucking–” Jaskier is mid-thought about how badly confused Red T-shirt must be if he thinks Geralt, flower-shop owning, sweet-boyfriend, Geralt is some crime boss fucker when he hears the gunshot. He flinches, ears ringing as Red T-shirt’s body hits the floor.
Honestly, Jaskier’s quite impressed at the aim, letting out a low whistle as he watches the dead man bleed, bullet between his eyes.
Someone chuckles from behind him, snapping Jaskier out of his amusement and making him flat out afraid when the cool of a knife blade brushes against his hands. He throws his head back, spurred on by decades of boxing as he enjoys the satisfying crunch of the guy’s nose behind him.
Or, To Jaskier, his boyfriend's a nerd who own a flower shop. To the man who's kidnapped Jaskier, Geralt's a fucking crime boss ?? Jaskier's just as confused.
