Summary
Dean Winchester remembers all too clearly what it was like to be scared and hungry and desperate. He remembers what it was like to have to give more of himself than he ever wanted to, just to make ends meet. And he remembers the day the kind motel owner, who would eventually become a second father to him, showed him how much more he deserved.
Eleven years later, he runs the exact same motel, and offers the same quiet compassion to the guests he loves like family.
Castiel Novak has never had it easy, and never expected to catch a break, but when he finds himself unable to work after an encounter with a client that almost killed him, he has no choice but to beg the owner of the motel he lives at for an extension on rent, and he's willing to offer whatever he needs to to keep a roof over his head.
Imagine his surprise when his landlord simply asks him to help around the motel — painting walls or washing linens. Imagine his greater surprise when he finds himself falling a little harder for the man with every passing day.
Still, he knows he's racking up a bill that will eventually come due, and when it does, it just might break his heart.

Castiel didn’t want Dean to go.
When they received the invite for Christmas weekend over at Mary and John Winchester’s house, Castiel did not want Dean to go.
Through all of the years they had been together, Castiel (more than anyone) saw both the visible and hidden scars that John Winchester had left on the man he loves. They’re still prevalent and so, so painful. Dean has never told Castiel the nitty-gritty details, never opened up about what John did.
It drives him insane sometimes. To see his boy hurting, with only the faintest idea why.
