Charles swallowed hard, his throat dry as he struggled to find the right words. "I... I just wanted to make sure you're okay," he managed to stammer out, his voice barely above a whisper.
Max scoffed, his laughter bitter and cold. "Why do you even care? You're probably happy I had to DNF today, aren't you? I’m just another obstacle in your way."
The words hit Charles like a punch to the gut, knocking the breath from his lungs. He felt the sting of tears threatening to spill from his eyes, but he refused to let them fall. Not here, not now.
