Summary

It’s coming into night when Jon leaves, and the god gives him an oil lamp to light his way to the village. His fingers brush against Jon’s as he hands him the lamp, and there is a jolt of sharp sensation; a reminder that he is still talking to a god.
“Walk safely,” says the god.
“May I come back tomorrow?” Jon asks, and the god smiles, his eyes shining silver-gray.
“I look forward to it.”

Summary
Their fifth morning in the cottage, Martin wakes up and Jon isn’t there. The blankets beside him are still rumpled into a vaguely Jon-shaped arrangement, but the space is cool, as if he’s been gone for some time. He isn’t in the bathroom, or the living room, or the kitchen, or right on the front step when Martin hopefully walks outside. He is, it appears, nowhere in the vicinity of the cottage.
Martin shoves away the pang of cold anxiety that echoes in his chest.

Summary

He’s here, something deep and instinctual whispers in him, and he perks up from where he’s been leaning against the alley wall, his eyes searching the crowd passing him by on the streets. His eyes catch on Jon before Jon spots him in turn. All dressed up nice for their date, his head turned as he looks for Martin in the completely wrong direction. Seeing Jon when he doesn’t think he’s being seen somehow feels like a stolen treasure, something precious that he shouldn’t have.
Uneasily, he thinks about how he’d sensed Jon so quickly, before he was even within his line of vision. Like he’d smelled him, heard his heartbeat-- or just sensed him somehow, standing out from the packed nightlife of downtown London. He doesn’t like it. It feels… predatory. Like he’s stalking him.
But that’s what he gets for making his boyfriend his thrall as well, he supposes.

Summary
“They say lying down with your eyes closed can be restful, even if you don’t sleep,” Martin said, in that pointed way he does when he wants Jon to learn to take care of himself but doesn’t want to outright say it.
“I know,” Jon said. He did not say that, if he lay down and closed his eyes, he likely wouldn’t have much trouble falling asleep at all.
He just wouldn’t … stay asleep. Best to avoid that inevitability as long as possible, he’s decided.

Somewhere else, Jon is free of statement giver nightmares but plagued by new and horrible nightmares that are all his own, focused around his own traumas. The first time he wakes up, seven years after arriving somewhere else, and realizes he didn't dream the night before is, understandably, an emotional experience.

Jon, the catboy, had been living with them for the last few months, unbeknownst to the owner of the ranch. He was still a bit wild — still nonverbal, still wary, with a tendency to hiss and scratch when he was stressed — but the rest of the herd loved him to death, and he finally got comfortable enough to wander around on his own.
So of course a cat left to his own devices would find the nicest, quietest spot on the property to nap.

Martin stares at Jon, who stands just a few feet away outside. In one hand he holds a paper bag full of groceries: the entire reason he and Daisy went out in the first place. With his free arm, Jon attempts to push Daisy away from him. The woman is currently curled around him as much as he’s allowing, hunched over so her hands are able to sneak past his cardigan and underneath his shirt. A venture which Jon is trying his absolute best to prevent, blush darkening his cheeks.
Jon can only offer a lopsided grin as he’s gently molested by their housemate. “Hey. So, um, something happened.”

“You’re not supposed to be up! I was going to bring you breakfast in bed!”
Jon yawned and walked over to where Martin was cooking. He inspected the half-finished batter with bleary, sleep-crusted eyes, making Martin suddenly self-conscious.
“I’ll just be a minute,” he murmured, “Go back to bed.”
“Why would I stay in bed when you’re out here?”
He came up behind Martin and wrapped his arms around his waist, resting his head against Martin’s back. He stayed there so long - swaying slightly as Martin moved about, reaching for eggs and whisks and measuring cups - that Martin thought he might have fallen asleep where he stood.
“Comfortable back there?” he asked, a teasing note in his voice.
“Mm-hm,” Jon said, “Very.”
In the safehouse, Martin cooks Jon breakfast. The pair celebrate a very special occasion.

It shouldn’t have been surprising to learn that Martin hated him. He had been, he knew, a truly terrible boss - he’d treated Martin horribly, caused him to lose his home, nearly gotten him killed. Really, it had been ridiculous to ever think that Martin wouldn’t hate him.
Still, Jon had been trying, in his own way, to make it up to him. There wasn’t exactly a card at the drugstore that said, “I’m sorry I berated you for six months and caused you to nearly be eaten by a swarm of worms of potentially supernatural origin,” but he’d been trying. He brought Martin breakfast every morning, made sure the breakroom cabinets were stocked with his favorite blends of tea, and had tried to work some genuine praise into his feedback of Martin’s work. None of it was the direct apology that his conscience told him he really ought to give, but Martin had appreciated it. Or seemed to, anyway.
Jon wasn’t certain what motivated the decision he made next - whether it was guilt or spite or something else. He could, he knew, be quite petty when the situation called for it. Either way, he made up his mind then and there to prove Martin wrong. He was going to be the best fake boyfriend he could be.
