Summary
She’s standing by the Hub, chatting with Dana, when Jack steps out of the exam room next to the bathroom. His mind immediately lights up. Samira Mohan is pregnant, and no one here knows.
“There he is,” Dana says as she catches sight of him. “We were just talking about you.”
Samira raises her brows, and he wants to kiss her right here in the middle of the bullpen. He doesn’t, of course, but he wants to, and Samira seems to know what he’s thinking because she shakes her head, half-grinning. “About me?” He asks.
“About house hunting,” Samira clarifies. “And your total aversion to fixer-uppers.”
“You can buy houses that are already fixed up,” Jack says. He is a grown man. He makes a good salary as an attending physician. Jack is not interested in being his own contractor. He’s not in Ortho.

Summary
Their sheets were white.
Samira had insisted on them when she moved in, claiming they ‘felt cooler’ on her skin than colorful or patterned linens.
This was how, even in the inky dim of their bedroom at midnight, he could see the stain, broad and dark on her side, the left side, the side closer to the window.
For a moment, his brain refused to catch up, instead assuming, believing, hoping it was still part of his dream somehow. Surely, if he was still asleep, and they were still at 27 Sycamore, then that burgundy patch was not blood, but spilled wine, or red sauce, something harmless, something that could be wiped away and joked over.

Summary
“Though they both spent so much time away from this place, twelve-hour shifts eating away at their days, returning to their bedroom always felt like a homecoming to Jack. It had technically been his before it had ever been theirs, but before that point, it had only been a place to sleep, and only when he had to. Now it was safe and warm, and it smelled like mint, jasmine, and slight hints of citrus. The darkest bits of the forest and the clean, aromatic scents of a garden.
In this room, it smelled like home.”
a.k.a. Dr. Jack Abbot comes home to Dr. Samira Mohan.

Summary
There had been people once: her Appa, Amma before grief hollowed them both out and forced them into survival. There'd been a version of her childhood where she wasn't responsible for holding herself together, but that life felt impossibly far away now. It was more dream than memory, something glimpsed through frosted glass, or written in a language she was no longer fluent in. Sometimes, she even thought she'd imagined it entirely.
And then Jack would do something — open a door for her, remember how she took her coffee, reach for the back of her neck when she was overwhelmed — and she would be startled all over again by the realization that being cared for used to feel familiar.
a.k.a. Dr. Samira Mohan has a mild concussion, a split-brow, and no idea how to let someone care for her.

Summary
"You want me," Jack said slowly, "to film you at your worst. As a deterrent."
"Exactly."
"For a hypothetical future pregnancy you're already planning to talk yourself out of."
"Yes."
He stared at her for a long moment.
Then he pulled out his phone.
The way he did it — one-handed, that small focused expression settling into his jaw — she thought, with total despair: this is the problem. This is the fucking problem.a.k.a. Dr. Samira Mohan is going to want to do this again.

Summary
It's supposedly perfect. She gets the Jack Abbot without the trauma and PTSD and grief. She gets the version of him that's soft and hot and doesn't expect her to placate him. They're just friends with benefits, and that very thought makes Samira want to throw up.
Because once again, Samira wants. She wants and wants and wants until the only thing left in her soul is the bitter taste of sorrow about what could have been, what should have been.
She feels bad for the stuffed animals she finds at the thrift store— how did she expect to not feel bad about Jack?

“Do you know if he’s into younger girls?” one of them asks Samira. Everyone waits with bated breath, eyes wide like a pack of hungry lions. Samira resists the urge to scoff, something curling low in her stomach.
“He’s married,” Samira says, her voice coming out sharper than intended.
“And… working on Valentine’s Day?” Molly asks. “Doesn’t sound like a happy marriage to me.”

Summary
Just like it happened on every other busy day, Samira had no time to stop and breathe. The adrenaline kept her spirits high, floating her from one room to another with light ease. It was a hell of a painkiller; she had almost completely forgotten about her injury.
Until now, that is, as she sits herself down to chart and finally lets the day sink into her body.
Suddenly, she becomes aware of the tightness in her back, of the soreness in her hips, and of the pulsating ache on the inside of her foot—pricking like pins and needles, to the point where the sharp sensation makes her shift uncomfortably in her seat.

Summary
Robby was left standing, mouth agape. He almost couldn't fathom what had gotten into Mohan that emboldened her to flagrantly ignore him. Whatever it was, it seemed he'd have no choice but to follow her instruction and take it up with Abbot.
Dana interrupted his thoughts with a clearing of her throat. She crossed her arms in front of her. "You really are as dumb as you look sometimes."
