Summary
The Alpha was feared for so long. He was a darkness, a demon who knew nothing beyond the jungle's wilds. No man or woman was foolish enough to speak to the spirit, ask it its name. The villagers called the spirit, The Alpha.
He was more than a man but not an ape. There were whispers of his nails becoming small knives and his eyes shining ruby red. No one ever got close enough to say for certain if these things were true, but no one would dare argue against it. None who’d seen the alpha, face to face, lived to tell the tale. Whether they died at his hands or the apes he called family, it did not matter.
It's been years since the Alpha-also known as Derek Hale, left Africa to live in England with his husband; Stiles. Danger lurks on the horizon as Adrian Harris and his sadistic league devise a scheme that lures the couple to the Congo. Harris plans to capture the Alpha and deliver him to an old enemy in exchange for diamonds. When Stiles becomes a pawn in his devious plot, Derek must return to the jungle to save the man he loves.

This is inspired by the “Everything Is Romantic” song/tiktok audio that has created hundreds of edits on TikTok for many fandoms. Falling in love again and again.

“I am sorry,” he says. “I am not trying to fight. I just don’t like the idea of you not being okay and me not knowing, even when I am in the same place as you.”
That Shane can understand. He wouldn’t like it if their positions were reversed, after all, if he thought Ilya was potentially in danger and he was in the next room over drinking champagne and making smalltalk. He sees Ilya go somewhere in his head sometimes, sees him retreat inwards, sees him check out even if his body is still there, going so deep inside that he doesn’t even catch Shane’s eye for a bit even when something funny happens, too far away for Shane to reach him.
But it’s also not like he can just go up and grab Ilya by the arm and pull him away from the party, not without inviting speculation and a whisper storm. He doesn’t have that right, doesn’t have that privilege, to potentially need Ilya or be needed by Ilya and be able to just pull him away.
It’s moments like these that Shane feels the weight of their secret like a physical thing.

Ilya makes the fatal mistake of uttering the words “It’s just hair.” It’ll grow back, he said. Shane is being dramatic, he said.
So Shane decides to teach him a lesson.
If Ilya’s curls are “just hair,” then Shane’s freckles are “just freckles.”
And if Ilya wants them back, well… he can wait until Shane decides he’s suffered enough.

Shortly after the words disappear, Shane Hollander rounds a corner pulling a carry-on suitcase behind him as he walks out of an airport security post. His face is serious, his mouth in a thin line as he looks around, his eyes searching the crowd. When they land on Ilya Rozanov, his entire face softens, and he smiles, his pace picking up as he now walks determinedly towards his husband. When he reaches Ilya, he leans up to kiss him.]
Shane: Sorry, they had to re-scan my bag. I thought for sure they'd found the dild—
[He breaks off, noticing Ilya's phone pointing at him for the first time as he narrows his eyes at Ilya, but his smile doesn't change.]
Shane: Are you recording me?
Ilya: Yes.
[Shane rolls his eyes, but doesn't protest, wrapping an arm around Ilya's waist as they begin to walk.]

“What are we doing?” Shane asks and Ilya holds out the other pair of skates he’d grabbed.
“Put these on,” Ilya says, and Shane takes them from him with a skepitcal look.
“Will these even fit me? And again, what are we doing? Are we even supposed to be here? I don’t think–”
“Shane,” Ilya interrupts, taking Shane’s face into his hands and squeezing just enough to make Shane’s lips pucker out. “You are going crazy at home. You love to skate. You love hockey. So let’s go skate. And play hockey. Just you and me, okay?”
Oh.
There’s so many things he wants to say. Like how much he loves Ilya. Or how glad he is that they’d taken the plunge off that scary, crazy cliff when they were teenagers. Or how even in the midst of the craziness and anxiety and unknown, Shane is so fucking excited for the life they’re going to have.
But it all gets caught in his throat as emotion takes hold, and all he can do is nod and say, “Okay.”

Summary
It happens against Montreal, because of course it does.
Shane Hollander has accumulated hundreds of penalty minutes across his career, same as every other hockey player, but none have ever been from fighting.
That is until a bad hit by his former teammates leaves his husband laid out on the ice and a comment that crosses the line has Shane dropping his gloves for the first (and hopefully last) time.
