JRR TolkienMirkwood is fraught with war when its Queen falls pregnant; its citizens are too busy on the frontline to raise a child, and so the elfling grows up to become untamed. Unsuited for Mirkwood society, Legolas is sent on patrol to the edge of the Kingdom, isolated and fated to live out his years alone.
A chance meeting with a ranger may change that fate.

“Legolas! We were just discussing the differences between life in Mirkwood and life in Gondor. There was little Aragorn could tell, for he has only seen your lands as a visitor,” Boromir says. “Might you enlighten me over a nightcap this evening?”
Legolas looks between them both as if they had presented him with a fine riddle. After a moment’s consideration, he nods. “If I am to tell you of Mirkwood, it is only right the discussion occurs over Dorwinion wine,” Legolas replies, and Boromir smiles. “Shall I set out two glasses or three?”
“Three,” Aragorn says, before Boromir can answer for him. He expects Boromir to be annoyed, but instead he looks quietly pleased, and claps Aragorn upon the shoulder heartily.
Before the fellowship leaves Rivendell, Elrond encourages the chosen nine to spend their days together, so that they might trust one another better before they venture forth.
Boromir decides to take it one step further, and see what might be achieved by night.

Ah. This, Legolas can understand, in the abstract - indeed, he has heard about how the blood of men might boil after battle, though he admits to himself that he thought Aragorn above such things. He knows from conversations through the years that Aragorn had not retained elven chasteness after he left Rivendell, and yet Aragorn has about him an otherworldliness, as if mortal thoughts do not run through him. “I fail to see how that involves me.”
Gimli does not respond, just looks at him long, until Legolas feels his cheeks heat.
In the aftermath of Helm's Deep, Aragorn is pent up. Legolas comes to his aid, in spite of Elvish chastity norms.

Summary
Fool of a Took seemed to be the enduring muttered mantra of the Fellowship, at least where Gandalf was concerned. It was entirely possible that the others thought it in their hearts– certainly not his fellow hobbits, but perhaps the Men that were sworn to follow Frodo into fire and flames, the grumbling dwarf, and the strange elf who spoke rarely and blinked even less. Pippin tried not to let it prick his heart: he knew this quest was something far beyond his understanding of the world, knew that truly realizing it would warp his brain in ways that could not be undone, knew that, after all, he was just a simple hobbit who had quite literally stumbled into saving the world. He could quell the pinpricks with those thoughts.
Before Moria, of course. Before knocking the helmet down the well. Before the balrog.
(In which Legolas has a bad time, Pippin has even worse time, and the fellowship finally gets around to talking about the balrog incident, though not before Legolas and Pippin run into trouble in the woods.)

But the neckline hung open, and as others trickled in for the meeting, Legolas couldn't look away from Lord Elrond's collarbone, couldn't stop himself from staring at how the fabric draped and gaped, exposing pale skin and dark hair that clearly travelled downwards.
Legolas had never seen body hair on an elf, couldn't push down the sudden and inexplicably intense desire to touch. The oblivious lord shook his hand over the map he was drawing on to dispel a cramp and the movement dislodged a sleeve, giving Legolas a glimpse of forearm — which also had a soft smattering of down.
Fuck.
