Excitement pumps through Childe’s veins as the words are uttered, his casual smile widening into an ecstatic grin. For it to be the Tsaritsa passing this mission along to him directly rather than Pierro– it must be high-stakes.
“You will be going to Liyue,” she says, “to enter a courtship with Rex Lapis.”
What?
Childe swallows harshly, his tongue feeling thick in his mouth.
“Your Majesty, I believe there may be a misunderstanding.”
More like an impossibly large oversight to this whole plan. “Rex Lapis and I… we are not on the best of terms, at the moment.” That’s putting it lightly, though saying as much to his Queen feels immensely childish, and shame surely paints his face a burning red hue. “I do not think he would be pleased to receive me.”
Her expression does not change, and she only answers him with patience. “On the contrary, he has specifically requested you.”

A year after the events of Liyue Harbour, another use of the Foul Legacy sends an already miserable and heartbroken Childe's health plummeting. The Abyss acts as a sickness, festering in his bones, and threatens to erode him. At home, with his family, Childe can only struggle against this illness for so long before his siblings send word to Zhongli to ask for his help.

“Big brother, I can help. Tell me what do you want me to do?” Teucer excitedly asks as he jumps about trying to see what Childe is doing.
Childe is baking. A birthday cake. Well, at least he is trying to. With his siblings wanting to hoard all his attention, it is proving slightly difficult.
“Teucer, how will you ever help me if you keep stealing all the chocolate chips?” Childe bends down to be at eye level with Teucer. His brother just gives him a sheepish grin; guilt knows him not.
“I really wanna help though,” Teucer whines.
“Alright, alright…” Childe picks him up and deposits him on the kitchen counter. “You see that,” Childe asks pointing at the heavy cream; Teucer nods.
“I need you to whisk it gently. Use this,” Childe picks up the whisk and hands it to Teucer, who, happy to have something to do, immediately gets to work.

Zhongli picked up Morax and tucked him into his arms. He stared down for so long it made it look like Zhongli was gazing not at a plushie but a real, breathing baby. Zhongli stared hard enough that he raised one hand, pulled off his glove, and began digging his nails into the tuft of fur between Morax's horns. Immediately, Morax shivered and started purring. Zhongli resumed scritching over Morax's forehead while he gave Childe a pointed look and said, "Childe, I will give you a few minutes. Explain to me why you have a dragon in your possession or you may explain to the Qixing why you have a proper dragon, especially one that has not yet been seen since the birth of Morax, in your care."
Childe swallowed, flicking his eyes down at Morax and back at Zhongli again. "Will you believe me if I said I just found him?"
In Teyvat exists a secret tribe called Creature Hunters who spend their entire lives caring for mythical creatures such as Phoenixes, Minotaurs, and Krakens. Childe is one of them. So when he finds a dragon one day, he realizes looking for its parents comes with the arduous task of also looking after Mister Zhongli, who for some reason is very good with dragons.

"Just trust me: if they show up at your door - and they might, because your reputation precedes you - you should turn them away at all costs. I don't think it'll do you any good to even try and talk to them in the first place. They'll ask you for something and want for another.” Childe smiled. "Of course, that's up to you. Since you're so well-read and all, I don't think I should be any worried. Plus, you're really sharp with your eyes."
OR: In a world where Childe has never met the Abyss, never met the Tsaritsa, never joined the Fatui, comes the inevitability of Zhongli meeting Snezhnaya's now most infamous toymaker and the fact that he must hide him away from the Osial mission no matter what.

Zhongli’s eyes widened, instinctively stepping out of the way as something darted past him. The odd entity carried the scent of rainfall, its body lightly glowing like an illuminated sea. The streets of Liyue Harbor were filled with panicked cries.
No one could gain a better view as the thing leaped into the water, vanishing upon impact. Zhongli approached, peering down upon the water’s surface. There wasn’t even a trace of that creature being there in the first place.
“... What was that?”

In which Childe isn’t completely human, is nearly 200 years old, could probably become an archon if he wanted, is a “part-time” Harbinger, and eventually ends up moving in with Zhongli.
Meanwhile, Zhongli has never seen a being quite like Childe in all of his years of living. Childe is left wondering why the Geo Archon looks at him like he’s the most interesting thing in the world.

Childe got rid of his mark long ago. He doesn't care about fate, about soulmates, about how the stars kind of know who your soul might find peace with. Most people need peace while Childe needs chaos: one can't truly fight back when one's soul is not on constant alert.
Now that he urgently needs to get his mark back because of those new snezhnayan bills, his best option is to ask an old friend from Liyue for some guidance and trust the process—Zhongli's presence has always been quite grounding for him anyway.
