The week they watched Rook's rest from their outpost on the Timberline, Criston always came early. If Gwayne accidentally dozed off at the Hour of the Nightingale, he would wake up to see Criston sitting there on his horse clad in gleaming iron armor, helmetless, his carbon black hair smoothed by the wind and still visible as soot. A couple of maesters accompanying the army had brought refreshing tea, which Gwayne had wagered was nothing short of horse piss, bitter and sour. Now the King's Hand was holding the small, ungainly container, the liquid drained and containing nothing but residue. Criston looked tired, but his eyes were sharp and alert, and he handed another cup of tea to Gwayne, who saw the undissolved clean white sugar. “I don't like sweet, but Alicent does.” He explained, to which Gwayne rolled his eyes to show his displeasure with Criston's smartass deduction.
