Summary
Most of Riley Andersen's secrets are locked away in The Vault, so that Riley, and only Riley, can know about them. But some secrets are so shameful they're kept somewhere else - far away in the back of the mind in a little town called Denial, where even Riley doesn't know about them.
One such secret is Valentina Ortiz. She has a plan to escape Denial and uncover a complex web of corruption in Riley's mind, and, in doing so, help Riley discover things about herself she has long repressed.
Opening old wounds is painful, but it may be the only way for Riley to uncover her own complex web of corruption out in the real world.

Summary
Riley Andersen has always been good at ruining her own life. College is her chance to change that, to leave behind the faults and failures of her adolescence and start anew as someone people will actually care about. The last time she left home to live on her own nearly ended in disaster, but Riley isn't that stupid little girl anymore. This time will be different. This time will be better.
She already has a head start with Valentina Ortiz, the closest friend she ever had, attending the same university. As long as Riley doesn't give Val any reasons to hate her, maybe reconnecting with her old best friend can be the start of a life that's actually worth living.
Deep down, Riley knows she's not good enough for Val, or anyone else. Val doesn't know that, though. She doesn't know about any of the things that happened during the years they were apart, and Riley is going to keep it that way. But the closer she gets to Valentina, the harder it becomes to hide the things she's ashamed of—and, strangely, the more she wonders if Valentina has some painful secrets of her own.

For what it was, Riley believed she knew how to cook fairly well.
Ever since she had taken an interest, her parents had lovingly driven her out of her comfort zone with the skill – and despite previous lackluster attempts that had ended up with them all contracting a mild case of food poisoning, they never took over Riley’s attempts to experiment with dishes. Tonight was supposed to be no different.
Tonight, however, both her parents were out late.
