Summary
A door swings open further down the hall, revealing a cluttered bathroom counter and a mirror plastered with stickers.
"I brush teeth!" Chirps a small voice with just a hint of a lisp, turning 'teeth' to 'teef'. There's a patter of socked feet on the tile floor, and then there he is.
The sight punches the air from Castiel's lungs, the empty space filing with the purest joy he's felt in a long time, because Jack is so… little. So wonderfully, perfectly little. Young like the baby he never got to be, the life Castiel had imagined for him and grieved a hundred times over as he watched him forced to grow up too fast.

Summary
Months pass, in silence and empty rooms. Sam calls in every favor they've ever earned and then some, never mentioning a word of it to Dean. Because it can't get worse. He can't give him hope, only to take it away again. So Sam shoulders the burden of that hope alone.
He racks up failure after failure, but he only needs one win. Then, he decides, he's out. Then they're all done. For good.

"Damn it," Dean coughs, turning his head to spit out another mouthful of blood. "This isn't…going…like I planned."
"So the reckless, renegade cowboy riding into the valley of death thing wasn't the plan?" Cas asks, his tone clipped with annoyance.
"No, the recklessness went perfectly," Dean says, breathing more easily now that his lungs aren't quite so restricted by the mangled remains of his thoracic cavity. "I wanted to deliver some cool line when we got back, though. About gripping you tight and raising you from perdition. But that doesn't work so well when I can't fucking breathe."

Castiel feels like he’s missing something, but before he can come to any conclusions a scream echoes through the bunker. He reaches for a shotgun left carelessly on a bookshelf, hoping it holds something more substantial than salt rounds, but Sam stops him before his fingers close around the cool metal.
“It’s Dean,” Sam says, corners of his mouth turned down with worry. “I thought it would stop, now that you’re back but… guess it needs time to set into his subconscious that you’re, you know, not dead anymore.”

Summary
“Dude, you’ve been staring at me a lot lately, like even enough that Sam noticed. More than usual. So, like, what’s up?” Dean pauses, purses his lips and reconsiders. “What did I do?”
Cas knows that would be a perfect time to confess to Dean what exactly happened and what he was thinking. Maybe, Dean had some insight into the situation or even some kind of comfort to offer. But, the longer that he sat there, he realized that he could not tell Dean absolutely anything. So instead, for the first time, Cas fumbled.
“Um,” Cas mutters and abruptly stands. “Freckles?”
Dean blinked up at him as Cas pivoted and left the room. There was only one remaining option he had and unfortunately, it involved Sam.
