Art was always considered a lapdog.
Becoming pliant in the hands of whoever gave him a second look and called him ‘Mine.’
Patrick came with the attitude, the intensity Art found himself entranced with his forwardness and dominance. Tashi’s dominance was never as loud or intense as Patrick's; it came with quiet looks, blunt orders, and a flick of a hand that would have Art at her beck and call.
Maybe that's why they broke up, Patrick and Tashi, they both needed something the other couldn't give.
Maybe they needed a dog they could both own and show off, a lapdog they could have crawling back to them every time they needed something.
Maybe they needed Art.

So, what do I get out of filling your line so you can throw balls to each other.”
"Oh~ I like this one." Andrew said. "Can we keep him, Coach?"

Neil gets a head injury that changes his mental stability. He is put on antipsychotic that causes him to become numb. After the Foxes recruit Neil's teammate in Milport and he's at the right place at the right time, he signs as well.

The glow that’s cast over John's book dims, a shadow blanketing the pages, and two hands come into view, bracing on the edge of the table, rings clicking against the wood.

John looks up and meets steely blue eyes with his own wide ones. Broad arms flex where the man leans against the table, and tobacco and sweet–cedar cologne fill his nose and lungs when he inhales, hitting him like a fist to the face, making his head spin. The stranger seems to consider him for a moment, and John’s cheeks grow warm.

“Marge takin’ good care of you, Buck?” he finally asks, lips barely moving.
“Yeah she really is, John. She looks out for me.”
John nods a little, stops when Gale tuts and rests a hand under his chin, featherlight restraint.
“She said you asked her if I’m takin’ good care of her too.”
“Yeah. Gotta make sure, you know?”
Gale hums, a sort of breathy ‘uh-huh’ through barely-parted lips as he carefully cleans the rewetted blood, swipes so gentle they don’t hurt even when he’s working right up next to John’s throbbing nose.
“You need someone to take care of you too, Bucky.”
“No point really,” John argues, definitely slurring now as everything catches up to him at once, adrenaline draining away to leave him nothing more than drunk and exhausted. “Not much here to care about. ‘S all back there.”
“That ain’t true.”

John Egan has survived hell and returned to America after the war to find some promises have been kept, but most have been hollow. The one bright spot in his disappointing return to 'normal life' is his next door neighbor Gale Cleven and Gale's wife Marge, both of whom somehow still find John to be worth knowing, even after everything.
