You save them, make friends with them, and return them to the sea, leaving you to wonder later if your friends with the Sun colored scales and fins that shone like the full Moon were real or imagined up by a childhood of loneliess.
Time passes. You hear stories of monsters, Sirens in the water, one that is a good omen if spotted, promising your safe voyage as long as you respect the rules of the ocean, and one that sinks ships and eats people for fun. Just folktales meant to scare children.
A decade later, they return the favor, though they don't plan on leaving you so easily this time.

Poppy held a wing up to her beak as she mumbled to herself, clucking lowly while looking over the various sets of knitting needles stuck upright around her small living room nest. Her size and instincts had led to this creation (being both that she was a bird and that her size did not lend itself well to standard couches or armchairs). It was made of sticks and a long, wide scarf of knitted yarn threaded through the lot of it, the edges of those sticks sanded down and capped with a multitude of smaller cozies. Some more pool floats sat on or within the nest, and you knew from once napping with her in it that it was very, very comfortable.
