Summary
22-year-old Arthur Morgan arrives in a new town with the rest of the Van der Linde Gang, looking for fresh scores and angles to work before they inevitably move on. After he's discovered scouting a job by the local mill owner's daughter, Mary Gillis, Arthur's world is transformed: amidst the routine chaos of life with the gang, he finds himself falling in love with her.
Mary's life, however, is not without its own complications. Attempting to cope with the recent death of her mother in addition to shouldering the expectations of her grief-stricken father, she struggles to contain—and accept the implications of—her blossoming feelings for the young outlaw.
The years that follow their fateful meeting change the course of each of their lives forever.

Summary
There were a thousand different things he should tell Mary. Arthur knew that. He’d known it for weeks. Most of them were in conflict with each other and twisted together with what he wanted and what he believed about himself, and all that was clouded by the certainty of the end he would face. He hadn’t even trusted himself with the thought of her for fear of what he’d do or say. That precious dream had crumbled in his hands, demolished by his own misguided choices. And yet, he had gathered up the pieces that were left and still clung to them like they were the only lifeline he had...
As things with the gang come to a head, Arthur hears some hard advice from a friend in the face of impossible decisions about what he wants for himself and those around him. Meanwhile, Mary receives a letter that takes her to Annesburg in a last-ditch effort to save her chance at a life with Arthur before it slips through both their fingers again.
