She made him wait an extra three seconds before pulling open the door with the poise of a stage magician and the smile of a devil.
“Well, well. Wanderer. Such a late-night visit? What would Nahida think?”
He looked awful. Not in a physical sense - his face was still irritatingly symmetrical - but there were dark smudges under his eyes, and a faint twitch in his left brow like he hadn’t stopped clenching his jaw since noon.
“It wouldn’t stop talking,” he said.
Mona tilted her head. “Hmm?”
“The ghost.” His voice was flat. “It’s still talking.”
“Sounds unfortunate,” she said sweetly, leaning against the frame. “You must be tired.” He stared at her, deadpan, not moving. She could practically feel his teeth grinding. “So?” she said, feigning polite curiosity. “How may I help you?”
His hands flexed into fists at his sides. “Stop playing stupid, Megistus.”

Something was off.Mona, usually razor-sharp, had begun faltering. She misnamed a constellation. She reversed an astrological law. She called Layla “Lisa” once.
The chalk in her hand dropped, twice.
Wanderer leaned forward on his seat, watching her with narrowed eyes. His smirk faltered as she stumbled over the phrase “celestial convergence” and nearly said “celestial caress .”
A pause . She flushed violently, then pretended to sneeze. “…Stars above,” she muttered, eyes glassy. “Why is it so warm in here?”
“Are you drunk on your own ego or is this part of the demonstration?” Wanderer quipped, but there was no real heat in it now.
Mona blinked at him. Her expression had shifted, no longer annoyed, but... soft. Too soft.
That’s when he knew something was wrong.
So he straightened. “Alright,”voice slicing through the murmurs. “Lecture’s over. Out. All of you.”

Mona groaned lightly. “Please don’t start.”
“Masked ball. Magical sky. Music. Strangers. The potential for dramatic irony is immense.”
“That’s exactly why I don’t buy it,” Mona replied, her voice dry as stone. “It’s too perfectly curated. People don’t fall in love under ideal conditions, they make bad decisions and regret them the next morning.”
Albedo smiled faintly. “Spoken like someone who’s never tried.~”
She arched a brow. “I’m not going to trip over someone’s cloak, lock eyes, and instantly discover my celestial counterpart, Albedo. The stars might guide fate, but they don’t write melodramas.”
“I think you just don’t like the idea of not knowing how something ends.”
“I’m an astrologist,” she said, mock offended. “It’s literally my job to know how things end.”
“I’m simply saying,” Albedo replied, “you’re allowed to indulge in fantasy. It’s not a betrayal of science.”
“Fantasy belongs in books. Or bedtime stories.”
“Or masquerades.”
