A spray of lager was ejected forcibly from Julian’s mouth, narrowly missing Dante and instead hitting the table and carpet. Dante shot under Fanny’s chair.
Fanny looked horrified, both at the Captain’s declaration and Julian's reaction.
Pat’s eyes blew open like saucers and Robin’s and Humphrey’s mouths fell open."

War Is Over (If You Want Me) - Prequel
Following the flashback to the Captain's death in Carpe Diem (Series 5 Episode 5), we know that Havers has survived the war and he and the Captain share an intimate moment as the Captain dies. But what happens next? This attempts to answer some of these questions and create a bridge between that episode and the Afterlife fic "War Is Over (If You Want Me)".
"Explain yourself,” bellowed the general, his moustache bristling.
Havers had several images flash through his mind: holding the Captain’s hand, talking to him tenderly and calling him James; yelling angrily at a room full of officers some of whom outranked him and inferring that some of them purposely stayed safely away from the front lines; and failing to return to camp last night.

Summary
On a hot summer's day, The Captain and Havers enjoy a pleasant lunch (and more!) in the shade in the garden. The Captain plucks up the courage to share his final buried secret with Havers.
"William's T-shirt was stuck to his back. "It is so damned hot." He seemed to wilt a little, put his drink back down, then pulled the t-shirt over his head, displaying a strong broad back to the Captain before laying back down. The Captain came over even hotter as he took in the bare chest beside him; toned, with flat abs; defined and muscular, but natural, not the sort of muscle gained from consciously “working out at the gym” was the phrase he thought he'd heard. Definitely more muscle than he had, but then he had always been slightly small, the Captain reminisced. And William was a farmer’s son; used to manual hard work and probably lifting hay bales or sheep from a young age."

ABOUT: Bodie must find a way to figure out who has attacked his partner, and why, and how to stop them--and keep tabs on Ray while doing all the above. Doyle must trust his partner in a way he's never had to before, whether he's at CI5 assembling a crime board, testifying at a hearing, or clinging to Bodie on the back of a motorcycle.
Takes place mid-Nov 1978, post “Man Without a Past” (S02-E04) which first aired on October 28, 1978 and allowing Doyle time to mostly heal.
