Summary
Neil just couldn’t make sense of why Todd stood out to him so much. It’s not like his dirty blond hair was much more significant than any other college boys’, perhaps a little silkier than the average. And sure, his eyes were blue and felt like they could pierce him from across the room, but Neil thought that was standard for anyone with that shade of cerulean. And it’s not like the smattering of freckles across his nose are that remarkable other than the fact that they brought everything together in a pleasant way.
“Shit,” Neil hisses under his breath, steaming milk frothing over and burning his hand. So much for throwing himself into making Todd’s drink to get his mind off of him.
He tries to keep to his work, but Neil also can’t help but flit his eyes over to the couple studying in the corner more often than not, his chest panging for some reason while admiring how good they looked together. Neil thinks he even catches sight of them playing footsie, not that he was looking that hard.
Or in which it’s 1995 in NYC, Neil is just trying to scrape by as an actor with his barista gig, and there’s this annoyingly attractive regular who has an equally attractive girlfriend, not that Neil cares or anything.

Summary
“I’ve read your poetry, you know,” Neil admits casually after a few beats of silence, as if he’s discussing the weather and not revealing earth-shattering information, while his eyes remain trained on the football game playing on the TV in the corner of the bar.
Did he know? Could he see right through all of Todd’s poetry, see all of the desperate clinging onto his glory days which were limited to five brief months because of his disappearance? Todd almost wants to lunge at him, wants to throttle this boy-turned-man for getting to know all of the agonies which traced his mind while he was stuck in this dingy bar still not even being able to tell if a smirk or frown was pulling at Neil’s lips.
Of course he doesn’t lunge, – when has Todd lunged for anything in his life? – just struggles to not choke on his spit while he rasps out a simple “yeah?” as if it’s a full question. This will be the death of him, he’s decided.
Or in which it’s 1981, New York Times bestselling poet Todd Anderson has run out of words to say, and he just so happens to run into the only boy who always knew how to speak up for him.

Summary
Once Neil gets to about page 6 when looking over his play, he feels his eyebrows furrow. Now, obviously since the play was about the Poets as a whole, there wasn’t really a main character. There would be a more prominent character in each given scene, but Neil made sure to avoid making himself the one who narrated and directed the entire story.
But once he was about halfway through rereading what he had so far, he realized that every character more or less revolved around one Poet in particular. Every scene managed to include the character, there were always in-depth descriptions of what he and his facial expressions looked like, and everyone either went to him for help or obviously valued his opinion highly.
Neil had named the character William, and he was realizing now that he had included a surprising amount of descriptions about this character’s blond hair, blue eyes, and unassuming but devout personality.
Oh shit, Neil thinks to himself, I accidentally made Todd the main character.
Or in which it's 1960, the Poets' senior year at Welton, and Neil's writing a secret play, his magnum opus, but there's just one problem: Todd keeps getting in the way.

Summary
"It's just that it feels like everyone's already against me. I guess I just don't want you to join them," Billy admits in a small voice.
Billy's running thin, stretching himself so far apart to hold onto his shitty life, and he's starting to question why he's fighting so viciously for a life he doesn't want. But then there's Steve: stupid, dumb, beautiful, loving Steve. And then he remembers the thread that's holding him all together, why he keeps going when it'd be easier to give in and die; it's what everyone else seems to want.
"I'd never go against you. Never again," Steve asserts firmly, and after a hesitant moment, he pulls Billy in for a hug. His arms wrap around Billy completely, and Billy holds on as best as he can.
Holding him now, Billy struggles to not think of them as before and after images, before being a picture of when they hated one another's guts and after which is a snapshot of now, how much they depend on one another as they held onto each other. What a fucking weird story.
Or in which Billy is self-destructing in plain sight and Steve just happens to be one of the few people who notice.

Summary
"What's squirrelly's name over there?" his already-arrogant voice asked after a bit of talking and getting to know the Losers. Eddie didn't want to give him the satisfaction of his name.
"Oh, that's just Eddie. He's what society would call... territorial," Stan answered for him while all eyes turned to his way. Eddie felt his cheeks begin to burn under the attention.
"Squirrelly? Territorial?!" he asked incredulously, the frustration seeping out from his voice.
"Dude, you literally never let anyone else sit in that hammock," Mike answered deadpan.
"And you look like a cute little squirrel with how you're looking over the edge of the fabric," the new kid, Richie, said while squinting his eyes and holding up his hand as if he was imagining squishing Eddie's head.
"That's because it's my hammock, and I do not look like a fucking squirrel. And even so, squirrels are actually vicious animals and not in any way cute," Eddie refuted back, rolling his eyes.
Or in which Eddie despises the new kid in town, and the only way he knows how to get his frustrations from him out is by ranting to the empty radio frequency he sets his walkie-talkie to.

Summary
Someone’s posted a shaky video from the stands, just behind the whole altercation. It’s close enough to catch the snarl on Rozanov’s face as he charges up the steps. He’s so pretty, Shane thinks faintly. The video starts too late to show what set him off, but it catches the tail end of what the man is yelling, the things he's saying about Shane, before pivoting to calling Rozanov a cunt and bitch and a pussy instead.
Rozanov drops his gloves for Shane. He wishes he could just be grateful, but it feels a little bit like the end of the world.

Summary
“I am normal,” says Shane, rearranging his silverware on the table. “And I will pass Logic, ignore Ilya Rozanov, and continue to be normal forever until I die.” When he reaches for Rose’s fork to move it parallel to her plate, she grabs his wrist and gently sets it on the table.
