Summary
The worst part about it, Simon thinks, is that when his skin starts to slough off, it’s replaced by a film of blood. And when that starts, the line of demarcation that separates what was strictly him and strictly other starts to fade. Even when his left arm detaches with an uneven rip and the voice in his head stops being his voice, he still hopes there’s a way to distill his real self from the sludge.
Simon subscribes to the idea that people get what they deserve as a consequence of their actions. Something along the lines of karma. It brings a sense of closure, and he’ll take closure where he can get it. With that, Simon submits himself to the notion he’s getting exactly what he deserves. This is how it’s going to end - with him blindly slinging an axe in a battle for unsatisfying gulps of metallic air, fumbling around the dark for a line that used to exist.
But he wakes up. And the first thing Simon’s traitorous brain thinks is that this man has the kindest eyes he’s ever seen.

Summary
It felt like the world had shifted when you finally left the daycare to get back to work. More accurately, your world view had been irreversibly upturned with the knowledge that you could actually mess around with an animatronic outside your imagination and the pages of a book. It was also validating that someone before you and possibly multiple someones were interested in the same thing considering the circumstances.
You doubted the animatronics gave themselves those upgrades after all.“Actually…” you paused, shrugging your backpack higher on your shoulders and staring off into space. Who actually did “upgrade” them?
[ I literally just wanted to write a fic with that title. So, this is a fic inspired by a title! ]

The moment Martin leaves the Lonely is the moment he realizes that it has taken something from him. He is left with the realization that the Lonely fog had been the only thing keeping him whole, keeping him from feeling the aching hollows of his own sorrow.
Speaking makes it worse, so he doesn't. He almost expects Jon to leave, to grow tired of him, incomplete as he is. But Jon doesn't.
Or, Martin is mute after leaving the Lonely, and he and Jon learn how to be people again, together, in the comfort of the Scottish Highlands.
