All worms can sting. Meryl learned that very young. Everyone does, even in November, well outside the usual territory of the big ones like these. Even the larvae have a little stinger, but their venom is immature and only causes a few hours of burning before it wears off. The big ones carry nastier stuff. Meryl’s heard of horrific allergic reactions, stories from caravaners who swear up and down that one of their coworker’s friend’s sister’s bosses got stung once and turned blue and swelled up like a waterskin and died before he hit the ground.

Summary
Back at the fuzzy first, when you were still small, the restraints had too much slack and you rattled and writhed so hard you broke your wrists banging on the metal cuffs. Arched your back and slammed down hard enough to fracture your ribs. No one cared. They just pumped more of it into you. You screamed as the bones shunted back into place. You screamed as they stretched, aching and piling on layer after layer of growth. You screamed to hear your own voice bouncing back from the sound-swallowing walls, to hear how it changed hour to hour. You screamed to tear the fine membranes of your throat ragged until your next dose came creeping in to seal over the blood with fresh pink tissue that was easy to tear again. You screamed to annoy the doctors. You screamed because you wanted to go home. You screamed for reasons you can no longer recall.
