----“I do not need a bodyguard,” Squall said flatly, glaring at Quistis and Xu. The women on the other side of his desk exchanged a glance, then Xu folded her arms.
“You don’t really get to decide.”
Squall pinched the bridge of his nose, closing his eyes for a second. Why did things have to be so complicated all the time? His finger skimmed the edge of his scar and he thought back to the fight that felt so incredibly long ago. It had been a good match, despite Seifer’s cheap shot. Or maybe because of it.
“Fine. But only under the condition that I get to choose who it is,” Squall said bluntly.

Summary
For years, Squall's been trying to get home while figuring out what's going on in the town-world he landed in. Then these people from Gaia showed up. And there's this one special kid with one big special key who doesn't seem to listen to anyone other than these weird talking animals. Squall wants nothing to do with any of it. While kids are gallivanting, he's stuck with no spaceship, trying to figure out what darkness is, what the heartless and keyholes do, and how he even got there to find a way out. Squall unravels the true meaning of darkness as he learns how the worlds were created. He forms new relationships and grapples with his old ones, loses his grip on one reality and starts to adapt to a new one. But what does he truly want?
Aka: The Final Fantasy 7 characters join Squall and find themselves thrown from their Final Fantasy worlds into the universe called Kingdom Hearts. (A canon-divergent, deconstructed retelling of the Kingdom Hearts (1 and 2) plot following the FF characters.)
