"Hybrids were not often accepted by the general population. They were seen as freaks of nature, something to be feared rather than to be kind to. Many hybrids hid their features, not wanting to be seen as something much more menacing that what they really were, but some, even with the amount of judgment, embraced those parts, despite what judgment that might bring them."
The streets aren't the best place for a teen to be, even more so when that teen is trying to hide the fact that he is a hybrid from the public.
It's easy to say that things aren't going great for Tommy when he finally gets confronted about his stealing at the market.
Nor is it great for a certain avian who cannot get his mind off the teen.

Vox curled up on his side and tried to go to sleep. There was nothing else to do now but wait for the other V’s to come home. Nobody else knew about his designation, there was nobody else who could help him.But as he lay there, shaky and exhausted, waiting for sleep to come, his mind wandered and he came up with a backup plan. If push came to shove and he found himself on the brink of insanity from the pain, he would take out the little handheld radio he always kept on his bedside table and provoke the Radio Demon into beating him up. With any luck, though, it would never have to come to that.
